Why do you hate humanity, I mean the Welsh
By a strange coincidence, I received three British pennies in change today. (This is strange because I am in Florida.) I have to say that the older style is a lot more pleasingly symmetrical, although the symbolism is lost on this Yankee*-- what is that thing, the Royal Waffle Iron? Whatever it is, it’s probably more representative of Britain than “a leg and part of a harp.” Anyway, even if it’s not a waffle iron, it makes me think of waffles, which is good. “A leg and part of a harp” makes me think of Harpo Marx’s legs. This is less good than waffles.
*admittedly, I’d also be hard-pressed to explain the design on the reverse of the U.S. dime: “It’s… er… symbolic of the American tradition of using Olympic torches to burn our weeds. Very historically resonant. Paul Revere signaled the approach of the British forces using only a horse, a torch and a handful of weeds.”
Not all that strange, Florida ranks IIRC fourth in British tourist destinations, after Spain, France and Italy. Something to do with some guy called Walter, I think.
