I’d thought I wasn’t going to post to this thread again, but…
If he had given you your bag before you went out with your newly-bought stuff, you could have stolen something from his store and claimed that it was just the Hot Topic purchase that was setting off the alarm.
Did you check to see if there was another “alert thingy” inside of the CD you bought? It happens sometimes, and it can set off the alarm even though the visible one has been deactivated.
Everytime I leave one of those big stores I am afraid the alarm will go off. Not because I am stealing anything but because it is embarrasing that others might think I was stealing. Normally when they do go off for me, I just keep walking through the doors and no one stops me. The last time it happened I bought some games in the electroinics section and the person leaving infront of me bought some items in the electronics section and both of us set it off.
I have a key fob for my car alarm that ‘shields’ the anti-theft tags from the sensors. It’s been demonstrated by me about 2000000 times, so I know it’s not a fluke. I just lay the fob over the tag, and it won’t be set off. Remove the fob, alarm goes off.

Actually, the alarms DO work.
We caught a theft with two VCRS under his arm, and it went off. When my manager asked to see his receipt, the guy took off running, and she went after him, and went to his car window, and asked him something. He wouldn’t answer her, but took off, almost hitting her in the process.
She got his plate number though. It turns out, he tried stealing the VCRs before!
Then there’s this one guy who keeps stealing baseball cards. My manager asked me to go over near the rack and straighten while he was there, to keep an eye on him, but not to look obvious. And I really didn’t, as the rack was a TOTAL MESS so it made sense that I was there. He glared at me though, and said, “So they don’t want me to take something!”
I just looked at him surprised like, and said, No, of course not, sir. All the while thinking, what an ass! If you’re stealing don’t even start this crap! What a moron!
