Chemistry Help - 2,4-Dinitroanisole

2,4-Dinitroanisole is a pesticide, dye, and substitute for TNT in explosives. It’s a pale yellow solid/powder. The CAS # is 119-27-7. I found an older MSDS from 2003 that gave the item as hazard class 6.1, TOXIC SOLID, ORGANIC, N.O.S. UN2811. from the Transportation section. My 49 CFR from 2007 doesn’t quite match up with the chemical name or the aliases.

A later study (Australian) stated that the chemical was hazard class 4.1, a FLAMMABLE SOLID. The study date was 2006.

Can someone check for the latest scoop. I need the hazard class/division, UN number, and Proper Shipping Name from the transportation section.

I don’t see why it would be listed as flammable; it’s a low-sensitivity explosive, with a melting point around 96 degrees C, and no flash point listed. What’s the discrepancy with CFR?

The CFR has no exact match for the substance or any of it’s aliases. So that’s not helping me.

The di-nitro portion of the molecule is the explosive portion - from the configuration and testing; it’s about 10% less powerful than TNT.

The anisole portion of the molecule presents a mass fire possibility - probably where the FLAMMABLE SOLID statement came from.

Two sources - Sigma Aldrich and AlfaAesar - list this in their MSDS’s as not regulated (nonhazardous for transportation) by DOT. Without more specific test data, I would go with that.

This is the first time a thread fit my current job!

Thanks, the CFR has a real close alias with a RQ (Reportable Quantity) of 10 lb. So small amounts would be not regulated for shipment.
