Cherry Heering = Luxardo's?

I have a cocktail recipe that calls for cherry heering, but I only have Luxardo’s Maraschino liquer in my bar. Does anyone know if they are close enough as not to matter? Thanks.

madmonk28, I’ve never heard of Luxardo’s, but I’ve had Cherry Heering. I’d heard such wonderful things about it, but didn’t care for it. Luxardo’s sounds more of a sweet, cherry-flavored liquor. Cherry Heering had no relation to “cherries” except for the name. I could be wrong, but that’s my opinion.

Hope someone who knows better can chime in to help you.

I just tasted the two back-to-back and I don’t think it’s a good idea to substitute. Luxardo has too distinct a flavor. It is sweet, but not cloyingly so, and it has a subtlety to it. Cherry Heering - which does taste cherry-flavored to me - reminds me of a sweet sherry in a way. Luxardo is clear and Cherry Heering is brown, if that makes a difference.

Maraschino and Heering are definitely different. I’ve never HAD Maraschino, but I’ve had Heering and it’s rather different from any description I’ve heard of Maraschino.

That said, I would think a subsitute would usually produce something quite drinkable, just different.

God no… Cherry Heering is kind of a dark red, intensely cherry flavored liqueur- kind of like cherry cough syrup without the menthol, except not artificial tasting.

Luxardo Maraschino is a different sort of intensely cherry flavored liqueur- it’s not even close to Cherry Heering, except for the tenuous cherry link.

Thanks all, I was planning on making Singapore Sling’s this weekend, but I’m not going to buy a bottle of cherry heering just for this drink and have it sit on my bar for another 10 years. I might make the sling’s with the Luxardo just to see what I get, if it’s any good I’ll call it a DC Sling.
