What to do with this Maraschino liqueur?

I bought some to try a Hemingway cocktail, only to discover that Maraschino liqueur in no way resembles those bright red cherries, and instead has a very assertive, bitter edge to it. I found the Hemingway quite meh.

Meanwhile, I’ve got a whole bottle of Luxardo Maraschino, and I’m totally at a loss for how to mix it. I’d love some suggestions, especially for applications that tone down that dry in-your-faceness. Alternatively, I suppose something that uses that to the best advantage would be welcome. I just know I won’t ever sip this straight from a cordial glass and appreciate its nuance.

Most cocktails that involve Maraschino are gin-based, but all the ones I can think of off the top of my head also require other obscure ingredients, which could well leave you wondering what to do with them. Meanwhile, you might try just mixing it with gin–try 2 oz. gin, 1/2 oz. Maraschino for a start–and see how you like that.

First off, you may have gotten a f**ked up version of the recipe. I’ve seen some out there that call for 1/2 oz of maraschino, which is WAY, way too much.

This one here is the shit, so long as you actually measure instead of eyeballing it.
(1/4 oz = 1.5 teaspoons, 1 oz = 2 TB, etc…)

1 1/2 ounces white rum
1/4 ounce maraschino liqueur
1/2 ounce fresh grapefruit juice
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice

Second, go here: http://www.cocktaildb.com and search for “maraschino liqueur”.

Mix with Coke or Pepsi?

My husband likes something called a South Seas Aviation (think it is a modified Aviation or something like that). It calls for maraschino liquor, which we never have.

Grapefruit juice (about half a grapefruit)
1 shot gin
1 shot vodka
lime juice (just a little bit)
maraschino liquor (have no idea since we don’t have any and skip that part)

I’m not sure about the ratios, but like all things, it is a matter of taste.

Well, I know what I’m doing at cocktail time this evening. That seems like a lot of lime juice - bet it will be tart! Will also noodle around on cocktaildb and have some fun. Thanks!

Crap… left out the simple syrup! I think it’s 1/2 oz.

At any rate, it makes a pretty interesting drink- doesn’t taste like grapefruits, maraschino or lime, but some interesting mix of all 3.

Make Maraschino cherries. There are recipes online. They taste great homemade.

That idea is so crazy I am going to have to try it. I bought a bottle of maraschino liqueur for my wife while we were on our honeymoon years ago but she never ended up drinking it. This looks like a great way to put it to use when I’ve really pissed her off and need to do something romantic.

Put a couple of those homemade cherries in a Manhattan and enjoy. I’ve never made them myself but it is easy. I have had them at bars too. Good Stuff.
