Chess game: Kythereia vs. glee

buffs his nails and looks studly as he sits hunched over the board

Except for when I play, the women flock to me.

No seriously

And the moves are coming rapidly now as we enter the middle game. I’m expecting a slugfest to ensue.

This is very, very cool.

My new theory: Kythereia = Judit Polgar

Now that would be cool. If Judit Polgar were hanging out on SDMB.
For those who read the thread and don’t know who she is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judit_Polgar

I am a huge Judit Polgar fan. If she turned up on SDMB I’m pretty sure I’d wet myself. (In the most dignified way possible, of course)

I first saw her name when I was reading a chess book that had a bunch of amazingly well played games to demonstrate superior strategy. It was a game between Judit Polgar and a grandmaster. She trounced him. She beat him so badly that it encouraged me to look her up. My jaw dropped when I found out that at the time of that game, she was thirteen

There is a great picture of her on this website beating the pants off of then-FIDE president Campomanes, when she was just a kid. Oh yeah, and she had her back turned.

Yes, Judit has had a fantastic career. She had a child last August, but scored an excellent result this January in the very strong Corus GM event. (Judit came 4= with Grishuk, Adams and Kramnik, scoring 7/13.)

http://www.coruschess.com/

Both her sisters are strong players too.

Judit IIRC could have been women’s world champion any time she liked, but has scorned the opportunity as she is more interested in having a shot at the men’s. Not to be sexist, but this makes her outstandingly strong. Compare one of the longer-reigning women’s champions, Vera Menchik, who did dreadfully against men (e.g. Carlsbad 1929).

I like to think of the World Chess Championship (even though we have ‘two’ at the moment  ) as the Open. There are separate titles for women and juniors.

it is difficult to compare players across the generations. For one thing, there seems to be some inflation in gradings. Having said that, here are the leading current players (all male):

1 Kasparov, Garry g RUS 2804
2 Anand, Viswanathan g IND 2786
3 Topalov, Veselin g BUL 2757
4 Kramnik, Vladimir g RUS 2754
5 Leko, Peter g HUN 2749 14
6 Morozevich, Alexander g RUS 2741
7 Adams, Michael g ENG 2741
8 Svidler, Peter g RUS 2735
9 Bacrot, Etienne g FRA 2715
10 Shirov, Alexei g ESP 2713

And the current leading women:

Polgar, Zsuzsa g USA 2577
Xie, Jun g CHN 2573
Koneru, Humpy g IND 2512

Judit Polgar has not got a current rating, due to starting her family. In Jan 2004, she was rated 2728, putting her in the World top 10. (Her tournament performance in the Corus event was better than 2720.)
Vera Menchik (1906-44) had a best 5 year average of 2350.

It was an interesting link that SiouxChief posted about Judit.

glee is it possible to make an estimate of the ranking common computer chess programs could be assigned if they play their top game? I am thinking of something like ShredderClassic.

Ahh, forget the question! I just looked at the settings, and 2400 is the level it maxes out at!

Here is a reliable set of tested ratings:

Ratings are calibrated to Pentium4 machines running at 1000MHz.

I’m doing just fine. Who has winner?

I remember when kibitzing was frowned upon…here it’s practically encouraged!

Well quiet kibitzers are still welcome at over-the-board chess games. However having your mobile phone go off at a tournament will see you promptly ejected from the playing area. (This will rightly prove inconvenient if you are a player!)

Since your comments won’t distract the players in the thread, feel free to say something.

Wow, I don’t believe I have ever seen 2.e4 before. Dubious sacrifice indeed.

Since this move is in no opening books that I know of, I hereby name this opening The Kythereia Doper Attack.
