Chess - training game (Glee v SiXSwordS)

As long as SiXSwordS doesn’t mind…

I’m familiar with chess notation, but I may have to ask questions to be sure we’re on the same page. You might have to do the same of me since if I have had problems reading my own game notes in the past.

I’d like to add spoilered notes so I can look back and remember what I was thinking. I doubt that glimpsing my thoughts would make much difference, but you might like using the same approach to add notes that I won’t look at until after the game.
I’m feeling far more intimidated than I thought I would. I’m approaching this as a learning opportunity, but I know that a lot of dopers – including those who aren’t that interested in chess – could beat me easily and I’m self-conscious about exposing my weaknesses.

In general, I don’t add a lot to the SDMB… I don’t understand theoretical or standard physics, I don’t have a lot of general educational acumen, I don’t have any specialized training or knowledge…

I’ve seen glee make this offer to others and I’ve always thought they were missing up a golden opportunity when they took a pass.
So, in short, I hope that others on the boards will get something out of watching me get my ass handed to me.

Thanks in advance glee
That being said, I’m up to my earholes today and I have to be away from my computer so I’ll post a play tonight.

Yes, do ask if you’re not sure about notation. Let’s use long notation then, since it may help (and a spectator asked for it too).

As I’m a professional, my notes can be public.
Remember you can ask me for advice - against myself!
The aim is that you get as much as possible out of this.

There’s a chess diagram feature online that might be very useful in order to view the positions.

I think that either player, or any spectator, could click on that link, make additional moves, and then click on the ‘make URL’ button to generate an updated link

Jolly good show, that man!

It seems to me I’ve seen you ask some good questions, though, which is not to be underrated. Asking good questions is just as much a skill as answering them is.

Thanks.

I played through a full game, just as a test - with all kinds of stupid play to make it end quicker. There doesn’t seem to be any auto-detection of a checkmate, it just reaches a point where one side is in check and can’t make a legal move to get out of it.

That would seem to make spoilers redundant so I’ll skip them too.

I think e7-e5 is the classic response. I’m not very familiar with the French Defense. I’ve tried to learn about openings but it hasn’t seemed to help my game except to give me ideas of what I might play.

Playing c8 also gives the Q an opening and plays to a center square, though I wouldn’t say I control it. Unlike e5, it does not open up my bishop.

Okay, trying to follow along for updating the board link, and c7-c8 does not seem to be legal - that would be moving your Queen’s bishop’s pawn into the bishop. :smack: If you want to move from c7, you can do c6 or c5.

Sorry, I can’t believe I typed that… then I typed it AGAIN.

I hope that doesn’t speak of things to come, although you must admit that having a backward moving pawn and a disappearing bishop would indeed help my Q.

Alright, much better. New link: Chess Board Editor - Apronus.com

This is already starting to get interesting.

Hmmmm. Taking on a Master using the Sicilian. This should be interesting.

Obviously you haven’t seen my playing style!

  2. c2-c3

I want to play d2-d4 to control the centre (and let my bishop on c1 out).
But if I play it straightaway, Black plays c5xd4 and I have to waste time bringing my Queen out to recapture.
Now I can recapture on d4 with a pawn.

SiXSwordS,
don’t forget you can ask for advice at any time.

Also there are various interesting and entertaining comments in the thread - would you find it easier if these were in another thread?

Not much of it, yet. Come on, your move. Gonna take that bishop out? Jump a knight? Or maybe show us some d3 action… yes, I’m getting a little too excited at this point.

ETA - and of course, you move in a simul-post, haha. Okay, here we go: Chess Board Editor - Apronus.com

You have much to learn, young Jedi / Grasshopper.
“The Master controls events by letting them happen.”

Certainly I do. Is it permitted for kibitzers to ask specific questions about the tactics of play? I’m curious about your current line of play - or should I wait until SiXSwordS has made his response?

I don’t see a Sicilian…

It’s a Sicilian that is going to morph. Obviously, glee wants to take this straight out of the book into something that forces SiXSwordS to actually think about his responses.

Or maybe glee just naturally does this to avoid the Sicilian. :stuck_out_tongue:

The Sicilian starts 1. e2-e4 c7-c5

It’s very popular becasuse the main line (2. Ng1-f3 and 3. d2-d4) is exciting and gives both sides real chances for a win.

However I don’t do that sort of stuff, so I avoid the problem with the steady 2. c2-c3.

What I suggest is that comments and questions migrate to this thread (kindly started by DSYoung).
And ask away!
