I missed y’all. I had to head back by obligatory plane ticket Dec. 1. Haven’t had time to get on the boards since my return to this other state.
I always have liked the diagonal streets of ChiTown: Ogden, Lincoln, Milwaukee, Clybourn (the former home of Atomic Pest Control, one-half of my Dope ID) … there are others, of course.
Anyone know about a mysterious Fifth Ave. in Chicago? There was a blues joint there where I used to see Big Smokey Smothers. I thinks. Memory fails …
Fifth Ave. is out on the West Side. It once was so important that it hosted a branch of the Madison streetcar line, but several blocks have been lost over the last few decades to expressway and school construction.
For about three decades around the turn of the century, Wells Street downtown was also called Fifth Avenue, a curious attempt to connect it to the elegance of the famous street in Manhattan. A couple of downtown buildings still have Fifth Ave. inscribed on the corner.
Wow. Neat! I’m going to go have to look for those inscriptions every time I am downtown from now on.
Thanks, Mr Downtown.
Sorry for the long wait in posting, but Tracyfish and I had a great time. Thanks a ton for putting this on. We were talking about making our way back over again to actually see something. I wish it weren’t a weeknight!
Rikc, if youre still in town, shoot me a PM. I think we can get you a supplemental Dopefest if you so require. I think you were at the first Ann Arbor one we had a couple years back if memory serves me right.
