A friend and I are heading to Chicago for a Cubs game (day game) in a couple of weeks. We plan to take a cab from Union Station to Wrigley, but I’m afraid we won’t be able to get one to take us back to Union Station in time to catch our train (Amtrak, not el). Any tips from locals as to where to head for a cab after the game? Is there a taxi stand? Any other suggestions?
If it matters, I go to Chicago somewhat regularly, but usually to the downtown and loop areas, and usually get around by cab or on foot. I’m not used to the el system, but not necessarily opposed to using it. Thanks.
It’s been ages since I’ve been there, but plan on the streets surrounding the park to be hopelessly jammed.
You might be better off hopping onto the El and going a stop or two, and looking for a cab there. Or just go all the way in reverse - take the El to Jackson/State and grab the bus to Union…
CTA:
Take the CTA No. 1 Indiana/Hyde Park bus or the No. 151 Sheridan bus to the Jackson/State subway station. Transfer to the Howard/Dan Ryan “Red” rapid transit line northbound to the Addison Street stop, which lets out one block east of the ballpark.
I have to agree with those who suggest the El. Here’s a map of the Loop. From Union Station, head east on Jackson for about 7 blocks to State Street, turn left and go down the stairs to the Red Line. Buy your passes at the station, it’ll cost you $4 round trip — much less than a cab ride, I’m sure. You’ll want the train going to Howard, get off at Addison. And get there early. Wrigleyville is a fun place to hang out before a game.
I don’t remember seeing cabs the last time I was there (about 5 weeks ago), but I wasn’t looking for any either. I would expect you’d be able to find one rather easily if you insist.
