Is South Burley Avenue considered to be a rough neighborhood? Perhaps rivalling East Saint Louis?
I don’t think it’s THAT rough. Statistics: http://www.chicagocrime.org/streets/burley_ave/
While there are plenty of better neighborhoods in the city, there are plenty worse as well. The street is in the far southeast corner of the city, near Wolf Lake and east of Lake Calumet, and there is some industry in the area if I recall correctly.
It is very industrial in that area, wedged between the Calumet River, Wolf Lake and the Skyway, I-90. There are some residences thrown in, but it doesn’t look like very many.
If I may ask, why did you want to know?
I work for a lending company and a few months ago some people who live on that street took us to the cleaners. They’re pretty crafty, actually getting fake companies listed with the telephone company and various online directories. Further research showed the address on Burley was a residence and not a business and I was just curious.
Then I suppose Viscera’s post is more useful to you, what with the crime statistics included. I would only add that the only place nearby with a similar reputation to that of East St. Louis would be Gary, Indiana. Especially now that most of the more notorius Chicago housing projects have been torn down.
