Chicago Quilters? Free clothes (fabric) for quilters or kid crafts

Hi,

My spring closet cleaning has netted some 5-6 large bags of clothing that isn’t really fit for wearing (many have stains or tears) but would be perfect to cut up for quilting fabric or other crafts. The whole shebang is free for the asking.

However (there had to be a however), I don’t have a car, or any way to get one, so they’d have to be picked up by someone with a truck or a van or a really big car.

I live in the Albany Park area of Chicago and I’ll be home on the weekends.

I’ve been trying to get rid of these for a long time but either people can’t pick them up or they only want to look through the bags for single items. I’m ready to haul them all out back to the garbage, but I’d feel really really guilty if I had to do that. Even though they can’t be worn, they can be useful. The SDMB is my last hope. The clothes are all washed and folded.

Anybody? Anybody with any suggestions at least?

Do you have a local Senior citizen center or church that might be interested in the material? (Lots of older people do fiber crafts and material is expensive). Such an organization may be able to find a volunteer to pick up the material if you explain your lack of transportation.

If all else fails, cut the clothes up into rags and use them for cleaning, or to pack fragile items for storage. It would be a shame to let it all go to waste.

OK, I’ve got two kids, three schools (two current and their former Montessori school) and at least five teachers interested in the clothes! Email me and I’ll swing by and pick them up. I live in Rogers Park but I do have a nice roomy car

Pandora, thanks for the suggestions. I’ll be taking MikeG up on his offer, but I appreciate the response.

Mike, an e-mail is on the way. THANKS!!
