Menino fucked up. What is this left crap? He’s the one who did something stupid. The rest of us have simply made our own opinions known through constitutionally protected means same as Cathy.
Come to that, though some folks are happy to generalize abut the theocratic right, most folk are only dealing with Cathy and his company. So far as I’m aware nobody’s suddenly elected to boycott all Christian-run companies based off Cathy’s remarks.
Cathy and his company did something a lot of us don’t like. We’re taking Cathy to task as best as we can. Menino did something a lot of us don’t like. Take him to task, not ‘the left’.
Neither side is monolithic, although this mass flocking to support CFA when folks don’t really understand what’s going on sure tries to disprove that.
I believe I said Menino fucked up. Several times actually.
And while I would love to join you in making that distinction, that isn’t how these things work. Whether we like it or not, Menino’s actions are a representation of the left. That is how he is perceived and any amount of “But that’s just what one guy said” isn’t going to change the perception or criticism. That other politicians joined him, only made it worse and more difficult to cut him out as an isolated nutjob.

Menino threatening to block CFA = a free speech issue.
Citizens boycotting CFA = not a free speech issue.
So, yes, if you’re angry with Menino, yeah it’s a free speech issue. A lot of us on the left are angry with him for pulling that BS.
But if you’re angry about the boycott and claiming that we shouldn’t be boycotting CFA because Cathy has free speech, then you don’t know what you’re talking about.
And since I live on the pimple of the ass of the bible belt south, 99.9% of the people I know are opposed to gays. Not a single one of them is anything but afraid of them. Afraid their “lifestyle” will encroach upon society and become completely accepted and tolerated. Afraid that gay people will recruit their children. Afraid that gay sex will be viewed as normal instead of the devious act it is. Afraid SSM will erode the traditional meaning of their heterosexual marriage and lessen it somehow (intangibly, of course, but still!). Afraid that it’s a slap in the face of their God, their bible, their nation who was founded in Christian principles (even if it wasn’t).
So, yeah, homophobe is the only way to describe it. Because those people are all about fear. It’s all they know.
So thousands and thousands of people ate at Chick-Fil-A yesterday. OK. I’ve disagreed with their corporate philosophy ever since I found out about it when they moved into my area. And I don’t eat there every day.
I don’t even know why we have to keep having this conversation at regular intervals. The definition is clear to anyone that can pull their head far enough out of their ass to read a dictionary.
It’s homophobia not homosexualphobia anyway.
Wouldn’t a homophobic English teacher be afraid of English teachers like themselves rather then homosexuals?
Sincere is from a Latin term meaning “without wax”. Goodbye is a contraction of God be with you.
Since homophobia obviously can only mean an irrational terror of gays, then closing a letter Sincerely yours must mean the person is all out of wax, though if they say Goodbye then clearly they’re religious.
And sunrise and sunset would imply the speaker is an idiot who thinks the sun revolves around the Earth. Somebody tell the folks in charge to fix these too. (See if Greg is on duty, he’s a lot easier to work with than Gladys or Farnum.)
Until then, let’s use the meaning that every single person here completely understands in its normal context.
Well, not specifically off Cathy’s remarks, but plenty of people boycott places like Hobby Lobby because of their association with religion. Which is perfectly within the boycotter’s rights of course, no matter how dumb I think that is. (The boycott of CfA makes a lot more sense).
Ooh me! I had my picture taken with him years ago at some event at Quicy Market, even.
