Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day

They are not getting a good education, and their college owes them some money back. Does this college not offer history classes? What is this, a barber college?
Another generation of ignorance.

I’m so sorry, Sampiro.

Sigh. CFA does not have an anti-queer stance. CFA sells chicken, period.

Now, if you are referring to Dan Cathy’s personal beliefs, he is not anti-queer either. Being in favor of traditional marriage is not being anti-queer. Deal with it.

Chick Fil-A, the company, donates money to anti-queer organizations. By anti-queer, I mean organizations that try to ‘cure’ gayness, and organizations that claim that gays try to indoctrinate youth and turn your kids gay.

It may be true that they’re getting a bad education, or already got an inadequate one in high school (during a political conversation over dinner in college once, I was amazed that one girl at my table had never heard of Senator McCarthy).

OTOH, it’s one thing to intellectually know that there were once laws against mixed-race marriages in the US, but actually seeing the consequences of those laws played out in a movie can invoke very different emotional reactions. Here are characters–fictional though they may be–who live and breathe in a social milieu where anti-miscegenation laws and other forms of racism are absolutely normal and, in fact, expected. And Show Boat isn’t a work of speculative fiction–there are millions of people who really did (do) hold the sentiments depicted in the film.

Chick-Fil-A day is another example of how “knowing” about anti-gay sentiment in the US is something very different than witnessing those sentiments in the form of huge lines for a damn chicken sandwich. And the people lined up weren’t being violent; they weren’t Westboro crazies. Their very banality (if that isn’t too loaded of a word) is what made their protest so chilling.

My best wishes, Sampiro.

This is one of the frustrating things about being a liberal in Texas. I’m straight, and so many people assume that because I’m straight, I oppose gay rights, so I get a lot of really incredibly bigoted comments (and because I’m white, I get to hear a lot of racist comments, too). Many of the people who make these comments just. don’t. think. The thing is, they might even know and like some individual gays, or blacks, or whatever, but they are willing to spout the hate agenda that they hear on conservative talk shows.

Some days, I feel like packing up and moving to another state. I don’t know where. And hell, for the most part, the hate speech isn’t even directed at me. For a region that prides itself on its warmth and hospitality, the South (and sometimes Texas considers itself as being part of the South) can be awfully cold and unwelcoming, if someone doesn’t fit into the proper niche.

I hope that the end result of this day is to show complacent people that gay haters are alive and active and are willing to do stupid shit that doesn’t mean anything.

Yes it is. Deal with it.

Nobody is trying to do away with traditional marriage. Last I checked, those in favor of basic civil rights for gay people aren’t trying to prevent men from marrying women. People like Sir-T-Cups (and you, if I had to venture a guess) arent for traditional marriage, they’re against gays having the same rights.

It’s disgusting.

I’ve been busy lately and haven’t followed the thread very much.

But thank you for this

Sampiro, I’m truly sorry. Your post is heartbreaking.

ComeToTheDarkside, thanks for that link. I’ve avoided posting anything about CfA on my own facebook page, but I shared that link anyway along with a reminder from Romans 14: "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. "

That’s right. From what I understand, every Chick-fil-A location in every state was jammed with customers Wednesday. Whatever this is, it’s not just a Southern thing.

Yes it does. They sell chicken and then they donate the proceeds to anti-queer organizations.

Yes it is. If you want a traditional marriage, go have one. Trying to stop gays from being able to marry is anti-queer, bigoted, and frankly disgusting. I am ashamed of you.

It should also be noted that one of the groups that CFA donates money to was lobbying the US Congress not to condemn the Ugandan Kill-The-Gay-Away law. So, yes, Clothy, you’re wrong again.

Chik-Fil-A the company is privately held, so in this case, the the Cathy family is the company. If they were a publicly held corporation, I don’t think that Cathy would have made the statements that he made. And as others noted, the company is the one making the donations that it makes.

I haven’t eaten there is twelve years, and I won’t eat there again.

I beg you, please read the Sampiro post people have been commenting on above. Beliefs like the ones you express above are part of the problem. People who believe like YOU are the reason he’s suffering.

Is that really what you want to do? Is that really the kind of legacy you want to leave for future generations? I really hope it’s not. I want to believe it’s not.

Yes, I believe this. And I’ll choose to believe the gasps were of disgust and “oh no you didn’t!” outrage rather than astonishment at learning of this new development in civil rights disgrace.

You must be new to Clothy’s posts to be surprised that he is anti-gay.

Sampiro, you’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the [del]new West[/del] old South. You know… morons.

Doesn’t help, does it? I am so sorry that you are hurt by this. I’m downright depressed about it myself, and as they say, I have no skin in the game.

The amazing thing (to me) is that he can’t even blame it on “the Bible says” like all the other phobes do.

As a minor note, if I’m ever in the south-east U.S. again (the last time was 1997), I expect I’ll buy something at CfA just out of curiosity.

And I’ll be sure to leave a mess in the bathroom, so they don’t profit off me.

First, CFA is not just in the SE, there is probably a location closer to you. Secondly, are you gonna beat gay people up just to find out what it’s like too? If you’re that curious about what it tastes like, why not get the recipe and try making a version at home.

I dunno how similar it is, but I tried the marinating in pickle juice before frying last night. I have an easier time turning down sex than I did saving the last piece for lunch today.
