Math doesn’t work that way.
Support in the South is at 35%. Support outside of the South is 50% greater. That’s a huge difference.

There are 29 states in the U.S. where I can be fired tomorrow without any recourse just for being openly gay. That includes every single Confederate state of course. Also includes a lot of other states, but the South is, as always, as forever, in lockstep of course. (In fairness New Mexico was Confederate and isn’t included, but they were a territory, supplied thousands of Union troops, and had a negligible slave population and gave more troops by percentage to the Union than any other CSA territory.)
A map of states that forbade interracial marriage or non-white suffrage the latest would have looked pretty much identical to this one.
When it comes to something as basic as “can you be fired without recourse for being gay?” the difference in 46% of the population who would likely say ‘yea’ and even 51% who say ‘yea’ to a ballot is pretty goddamned important.
I’m not sure that’s as meaningful as you think. There are a metric shit-ton of Chik-Fil-As in the South, but they’re pretty rare on the ground outside of the region. If there’s only one Chik-Fil-A in, say, Michigan, it doesn’t take a whole lot of Michigan bigots to swamp the place. If there’s fifty Chik-Fil-As in Alabama, it takes fifty times as many bigots to fill up all those stores. If there were an equal restaurant density in both states, I suspect the Chik-Fil-As in Michigan wouldn’t have been nearly as crowded, as the local bigot population would have been spread pretty thin between all those locations.
More detailed sexual-orientation discrimination laws map.
It’s amazing to me how many well informed people don’t realize that sexual orientation is NOT a standard inclusion in anti-discrimination laws or EOE status.

Why is this in Cafe Society??
My theory…mods have no problem with threads that seem to portray Libs as lovely human beings (even though they are willing to damn every member of a group they disagree with) and Conservatives as pure evil.
Conversely, threads that do the opposite are moved or closed rapidly.
Just my theory.

I don’t find anything puzzling about it. The topic deals with Chick Fil A, a foodmaking company. The boards typically err on the side of Cafe Society when it comes to placing any thread having anything remotely to do with food.

Where do you propose it be moved? GD? The Pit? The latter would mean we could start insulting each other, but does GD offer any such additional freedoms?

No duh. Thats how democratic type voting generally works you know.
But don’t act like because gay marriage (or whatever gay rights thing is important to you) will pass in one state and not in the other that one state is full of nothing but love and joy and the other is nothing but chock full of gay haters.
Heck you example proves just that. In your example all that means is that one state has a smidge less gay haters. So I don’t think that state has much claim to some sort of populist moral high ground (ie we are all sooo good and you are all sooo bad).
If you need/want to move for your rights please do so. But don’t fool yourself that where you are going is full of nothing but openminded people.
Now, you show me a state where only like one in 5 to 10 are against gay marriage and a state where most of people are against it, then yeah that starts to get embarrasing in my opinion.
Well at least it’s not like living in Iran as gay people. You know being hung to death in the public square from heavy equipment by government officials and shit. Aren’t there more pressing issues to deal with in the US than some chicken mongers opinion on marriage ? What is the intent here really, force him and everyone else to like it ? Let me know how that works out for ya.
Just remember, SSM will be soon coming to every state eventually in the US. It’s just a matter of time.

As someone who’s lived in West Michigan my whole life, I suspect you’re very wrong and those restaurants would have been packed to the gills all day. It’s actually quite conservative and very religious up here
(even though they are willing to damn every member of a group they disagree with)
Bigots? Sure, I’m all for damning every single one of 'em.
Not that I believe damning does a lick of good, since there’s no One to damn 'em and no Where for them to go if they are, but hey. I sure WISH there was a hell, if only for those fuckers.
I love the way so many seem to believe that buying a chicken sandwich makes them Rosa Parks, Gandhi, and Nathan Hale rolled into one. My, that is one hell of a stand you just made- and as a result the crops will come in, your kids will all be straight, your husband will love you again, and that thing on your back will stop changing shape, all because of eating that sandwich. Good on you!
You have that backwards. That describes people who felt that way by advocating to NOT go there because their COO dared to say he was against gay marriages. Oh the horror - yes that should dictate whether or not you buy a sandwich there :smack:
Honestly this whole thing was stupid from the start IMO. He’s a fool for daring to speak his mind out to a society completely loony with PCness, people who are whining about him daring to have an opinion that disagrees with theirs and so advocating not buying there are self-righteous morons, and people who think buying there to go “in your face” to them aren’t much better, although I at least give them credit for making this boycott BS backfire.
Basically if you like the sandwiches, eat em. If not, don’t. As you say, Rosa Parks this aint.
people who are whining about him daring to have an opinion that disagrees with theirs
Stop. Stop that right now. Don’t make me get a rolled-up newspaper.
Nobody is pissy at him for having a different opinion. People are angry with him for using company money to donate to hate groups. That is not a mere fucking opinion.
I don’t care if the bigwigs at company XYZ are prejudiced against blacks or Jews or gays or whatever. I do care when they act on their prejudice and make public statements crowing about how they’re morally right for doing so.

I hate to break it to you, but trying to paint Chik-FilAs as a more “southern thing” is about as idiotic as labeling people against same-sex marriages as “bigots.” There are plenty of this chain all over (at least around the eastern part of the country, granted I can’t speak for the mid to more western areas), and just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t make them a bigot. FYI.
PS re the issue at hand I could personally give a flip either way. However Chik-Fila makes some good sandwiches and that is something I will defend
If they need defending, they’re not that good, just saying.
Stop. Stop that right now. Don’t make me get a rolled-up newspaper.

…except the Jim Henson Co: http://laist.com/2012/07/23/jim_henson_company_cuts_ties_with_c.php I’m sure they’re the only ones. Right.
People are angry with him for using company money to donate to hate groups. That is not a mere fucking opinion.
You’re right. It’s a fucking outright fabrication. And a total fucking crock. Fucking please. And pass the fucking newspaper.
You’re right. It’s a fucking outright fabrication.
No it isn’t.

Why are you opposed to freedom of speech?
I hate to break it to you, but trying to paint Chik-FilAs as a more “southern thing” is about as idiotic…
No it isn’t. The vast majority of their stores are in the South, it was founded in the South, for the majority of its existence it has operated solely in the South, and its owners are Southern.
… as labeling people against same-sex marriages as “bigots.”
They are. Anyone who wants to deny a group of people their basic civil liberties because of sexual orientation is a bigot.
