So this is where you stopped reading? And you ignored the part where I said it’d be awesome* to see this guy respond to a letter*? If he responds with more silly talk about gays being evil, then more fodder for the masses to malign his character with. If he responds with anything else, well that bridge would need to be crossed whenever it was come to. It would probably be awesome though.
All I’m saying is, it can’t hurt to contact him, at all. But just hooting and hollering on a message board ain’t doing nobody no good, and is akin to standing on the street corner yelling at the moon. If you believe in your position, whatever it is, strongly enough, then why not try to change the guy’s mind? Even if you know you’ll fail, like with the pres of CFA, it’d still be a fun exercise and could potentially net some more crazy talk from him, or gasp you might be the guy who changes his mind!!!
Man…ya’ll are way too up tight about this whole topic, and everything that may surround it. It’s like… U all mad bros!
But noooo…we’ve prejudged this “shitstain” (as kayaker said) to be not worth the time or effort. Well ok then. A simple “No thanks, I’ll pass on that idea” would have sufficed. Instead you guys stirred up the pot and started an argument, started insulting me, blah blah here we are!
I’ve clearly stated my position on the matter - I think the right way to go about this is to contact the individual, attempt to make him aware of your feelings and the feelings of those around you, and try to change his mind on an individual level. Your chances might improve if you do it with tact and logic and actual reasoning skills. If that fails, which it probably will, but nets some fun material, great. Move on to the next step, which you’re all obviously wonderful at coming up with, boycotts and street marches and whatnot.
Why the hell do you care what my stance on gay marriage is? It’s got nothing at all to do with the points I’m trying to make. Marriage is a legal contract, set up by the government, and it’s not right for the government to be picky about who gets to enter into it. If a religion doesn’t want to recognize the marriage because of whatever reason, that’s their right, as is the rights of the individual members to not recognize the marriage as Christian. They’d still have to recognize it as being legal though. Legislating religious ideas is wrong for any government on earth to do. Does that make you happy now?
If the guy wants to give money to people who are like minded to himself, he’s got that right. It’s not like it’s provable that he wants that money spent on laws being enacted to ban gay marriage. Maybe he likes the other aspects of those organizations? If it’s proven that he’s trying to buy laws, then he’ll go down for that. Totally different conversation.
And we’ve got the right to flip him off and not buy his stuff. Sorry we’re not all as sanctimonious as you.
You know what you’d get? A form letter.
Looks like there’s a protest planned for August 3rd.
It most certainly is. Do a Google image search for “U mad bro” and you’ll see images of a black and white figure grinning AKA trollface. Other than “U Jelly?” this is probably the most common troll phrase ever. I’m only referencing the phrase here, not making assumptions.
Huh. Oh well. I don’t think that Uber_the_Goober is being a troll, however, just annoying.
Per the below you think that this while thing might be some awkward misunderstanding, and that if we would only sit down like reasonable people and “communicate” maybe we could understand each other better?
You seem to be thinking that maybe, just maybe there is the potential for a “I could have had a V-8” epiphany where he will slap his palm to this forehead and realize the error of his philosophical position.
You seem offended and perplexed that people dismiss your calls to reach out and engage him conversationally on this issue. You are being both smug and disingenuous with this too cute little position. His position is wedded to his bedrock religious beliefs. Trying to argue him out that position would be an incredibly stupid waste of time, and yet you keep waving this little rhetorical parasol around with a smirk on your face.
The issue here is not in any way, shape, or form about a lack of information or understanding about his position and the position of those opposing his stance. He is an intelligent and well educated man who has made his stance on same sex marriage crystal clear.
Intelligent people on both sides are engaged in war of cultures. People know where they stand. The only way that those opposing him will have any kind of influence on his position is by shaming the corporation and leveraging whatever cultural influence they can muster to make his position look uncool and unseemly.
On the face of it that’s not much purchase to change anyone’s mind, but over time, as with DADT, and similar keeping that kind of glacial pressure up can grind the opposition to pieces. No one, especially a business, wants to be considered a social pariah, and even if he doesn’t care about how the mass culture perceives him and by extension his business, his children and inheritors most likely will.
Respect.
This may come off as callous but here goes… Protecting the franchise owners from harm isn’t my concern, it’s Dan Cathy’s. If Cathy’s actions damage the brand and cause the individual franchise owners to lose business their beef is with him and not with the people who choose not to patronize their restaurants.
Boycotting CFL may not have an immediate effect on the parent company’s bottom line but it will have an effect. The existence of an ongoing boycott and controversy surrounding the brand will be factors that prospective franchise owners take into consideration when deciding between CFL and the dozens of other franchise options available to them.
Lest anyone think the “subhuman” reference is hyperbole or an exaggeration one of the particularly hateful arguments that is frequently used against marriage equality is that it is impossible for gays and lesbians to actually love their partner.
Several years ago, we had a layover at IAH and took Miss DrumBum to one of these. The food was unremarkable but what surprised and appalled the missus and I was that the “toy” in a kids meal was a condensed “Chick Tract.” Needless to say, Miss DrumBum was displeased.
I know, this is Texas. .:smack:
Turns out it was a mistake. He heard “homosexual union” and thought it was “popsicle bunion”.
That’s a metric ass-ton of assumptions you’re swinging around there like it ain’t no big thing.
I’m not offended, but perplexed, yes.
You’re interpolating “smug” and “disingenuous”. Also, bonus points for the condescending “too cute little position”.
It is only a waste of time according to your perception of the situation, and yes, I acknowledge that many here agree with you.
No smirk on my face, either.
So I get it, none of you are interested in this course, blah blah, more of the same, doing things a different way is wrong and bad, even though this is what we’re accusing him of thinking.
I maintain my original position, that it’d be worth it to try and engage him in conversation, even if you don’t think it’d help. This of course doesn’t preclude anyone from also engaging in a “shame the corporation” campaign, or boycotting it, or any other course of action. When did this part become so black and white?
You’re just unwilling to even try this, having already formed your opinion of how it will turn out. That’s cool…but for some reason, the fact that I’m suggesting it, even vigorously so, is making me some kind of quasi-enemy of yours. What’s the deal with that? :dubious:
Wait what? That’s downright ridiculous…them things ain’t fit for wiping a runny turd from the rim of a public toilet.
Are you sure it wasn’t just one employee doing this? Because I’ve never seen it or even heard of it being done elsewhere.
How come the personal feuds between Uber, LHOD, Astro et al have completely taken over this thread? Can you guys take it somewhere else?
This bitchiness has made me mad… bro…
Darned good question.
I’m locking this.
It has been brought to my attention that once a thread is locked, you can’t do cross-thread quoting of posts. I had not realized that.
I’m reopening the thread so people can respond to each other’s *on-topic *, civilly phrased arguments. Name-calling and insults (Uber the Goober, Left Hand of Dorkness, I’m looking at you – as well as everyone else who’s tempted to do so) will result in warnings.

I gotta admit, I guffawed. I rarely guffaw (I usually chuckle, or possibly titter), so this was a big deal for me. I saw the entire sequence, and it was a good’un- Stewart’s on fire this week.
Whilst working out last night, I was forced to watch FoxNews. Some talking head described this as “The Liberal War on Chick-fil-A”. This damn near made my head explode.
No liberal leader told me to boycott Cfa. I didn’t even realize until he said it that anyone could possibly view this as a left/right political issue. No, I’m boycotting Cfa because it’s the right thing to do.
