Chicken and the Egg

Why do chickens lay unfertilized eggs? What possible benefit could this have? As a healthy hen can lay an egg a day…I dunno…that’s a huge investment in NOTHING.

A chicken and an egg just finished having sex. The egg turns to the chicken and says disdainfully, “Well, I guess that answers THAT age old question.”
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

:stuck_out_tongue:

neither could the chicken?

There was a thread on this just a couple of weeks ago; I think the conclusion went something like:

Chickens are domesticated, so they have been selected to lay almost constantly
Plus the hen’s body is pretty much geared up to crank out eggs on the assumption that most of them would be fertilised (in the wild).
