Ok, I read this book as a child but when I think about it now, the parts I remember make very little sense. Maybe someone can help me remember the title. It was not a picture book - it definitely had chapters. It might have been “intermediate” or “YA”.

The parts I remember:
-Main character is a girl maybe 10-14 who has a little dog
-Little dog has a limp because when Dog was a puppy, Girl lost her temper and swatted him with a broom
-At some point there’s a kindly veterinarian who fixes Dog.
-Girl’s family is very poor – at some point she finds $5 on the street and its a big deal. Maybe she meets a friend who is considerably more well off? (not sure about that last part)

Small bump to add, I think there were a few black & white or maybe sepia drawings, like a small illustration at the start of each chapter.
