I am furious about this. This child had been raised by her aunt since her mother had her in prison. When the aunt asked for help raising the baby girl, instead DFACS gave her back to her mother, who had not even asked for the child.
There just aren’t words. Two supervisors overrule the recommedation of their own caseworker. Now a baby girl is dead. The supervisors have resigned. That doesn’t give that baby her life back.
People like this make me sick to my stomach. SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT FIT PARENTS. Re-unification of the family is a lofty ideal, but it is not always feasible. LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO WORK WITH THE KIDS, you fucking over-educated morons.
I know this really doesn’t have enough vitrol for a Pitting, but there wasn’t anywhere else suitable to put it. I despise micro-managing supervisors who won’t listen.
The aunt was asking for help - she got a dead baby. Great job, DFACS.
Unfortunately this is DFACS SOP. I have a wonderful friend who is a DFACS case worker. The tales of supervisor stupidity he tells are craptacular. The sad thing is, the supervisors who overruled the caseworkers who are on “administrative leave” will get nothing more than a slap on the wrist and possibly a few days leave without pay. Such is DFACS.
When will people learn, that just because a woman gets randomly knocked up like a dumb cow in a breeding pen, it doesn’t mean she has what it takes to raise a child. That aunt took responsibility for the baby on her own initiative and was smart enough to ask for help when she needed it. The mother had NOTHING going for her except biology.
Unbelievable. Knowing that the mother is an ex-con who is having to undergo anger management classes, is living on $65/wk, **and **diagnosed with depression which she isn’t receiving medication for, the courts decide that she’s the perfect environment.
The judge who approved the order, knowing all this, should also get their ass kicked. It’s a huge fuck-up from start to finish.
Hopefully, some good can come from the tradgedy of little Nateyonna’s death. Perhaps this will lead to some changes in the system.
My grandmother lives in fear that her granddaughter will be taken from her. The child’s mother died shortly after her birth and the father is in no way fit to take care of her. One of the father’s adult children expressed avid interest in taking the child when she learned that there were social security checks involved. My grandmother is terrified that the father will move in with the adult daughter and try to take custody back. I’ve tried to reassure her that it’s unlikely to happen, but when you hear stories like this one, it makes your blood run cold.
