OK, so a chimp is physically stronger than an average man but in this case did they actually clobber full grown men?
I think there is some information lacking. When exactly was this? 40’s, 50’s, or the 90’s? I would assume if it was only $100 reward and PETA didn’t intervene it’s was a long time ago.
We all know how reputable side-show carnivals are so…were the spectators charged admission?
I find it hard to believe that it was totally legit. Why not hire a couple of big men to pretend to fight the chimp and lose. This entertains the crowd and hopefully deters anyone from actually trying. There is far more revenue generated in the paid attendance and concessions. Word of mouth spreads and you have packed events every night.
Now, what if they allowed betting? The chimp is trained! It wouldn’t be hard to fix any fight to suit the house.
Why risk your star attraction?
I mean, imagine if some Butterbean chump gets up and knocks the chimp out… or worse? Who would go to that show again?
I doubt the question Cecil answered is about a real event. The idea that a chimp could be trained to toss a struggling human out of a ring without hurting people and incurring lawsuits is bizarre. Even if litigation were less likely back then, somebody would have been seriously mamed if they tried to fight the chimp and it went ape-shit on them (so to speak). : )
