Altough your advice is helpful I don’t need you to remind me of my civic duties nor my personal ones. But thanks for thinking of me.
Due respect, but isn’t that what your OP is doing to pretty much everyone — reminding the country, nay the world, of its civic duties?
Are you saying that you were NOT mourning the deaths and homelessness that the earthquake inflicted? Granted, it was a pun on a more common expression (in keeping with Liberal’s apparent view that your thread is an example of Recreational Outrage), but it was certainly not an insult that demeaned your character, suggested your parentage was in question, or mocked your appearance or intelligence.
You are seeing insults where you do not need to do so.
As to your PMs:
Like most Mods I do not hover over the SDMB with one screen set to the Forum and one screen set to e-mail, hitting “refresh” every thirty seconds. Your Reported posts apparently arrived in my in-box shortly after I had reviewed my e-mail, so I did not immediately see them. By the time you had PM’d me, you had already posted your angry response in this thread (which I had not yet opened), and I had seen your exchange in the other thread.
So I have three bits of advice:
Stop seeing insults where none are actually offered;
Do not respond to perceived insults when it is more appropriate to ignore them (or Pit them);
Do not assume that the staff is going to see and act on every complaint with sub-second response time.

I think the board would be better served if arguments in private messages were not brought into Great Debates.

Well that’s my opinion as well. But as Liberal has decided to hijack the thread with his dogged pursuit of some childish obsession, I don’t see any point in any attempts to further discuss what is a matter of no consequence or importance to anyone but myself, for the most part. I would however like to add a comment in response to Toms council and subsequent statements. As far as I know recreational outrage threads are normally conducted in the pit. I’m sure you wouldn’t notice as you don’t “hover” on the board nor do you moderate there, but I rarely if even ever, respond to such threads as they serve very little purpose, the expression of outrage being the primary one, but to soothe ones anger and Liberals attempts to attach such feelings to me are childish and misquided. Your statements here are primarily a pat on the head to a spoiled child, in my opinion.
Non-flaming questions about and challenges to Moderating are to be posted in About This Message Board (as newly posted, here) and flames of posters or Mods are to be posted in the Pit.
Any further hijacking of this thread to discuss Moderation or to slyly pursue insults against other members will be met with a Warning.

Well allrighty then!

I 'unno. I got my own problems.
the president of the US called his counterparts in China to offer aid and condolences. IIRC, half a million dollors from some sort of immediate disaster relief was sent, Bush said that the US military would respond to requests, at least 2 military cargo planes have delivered aid to chengdu, Pres Bush and wife Laura went to the chinese embassy to pesonally sign the condolences book.
never thought i’d say t is but dubya has responded like a global statesman.
I think that’s just people left homeles by the quake. It doesn’t include China’s existing homeless population scattered throught the country. It would be the equivalent of the population of Brooklyn and Queens suddenly having their their homes destroyed with no place to go.
That’s per capita GDP, not aggregated. We have a much larger population than all those countries so we are, in fact, the wealthiest county. According to this chart, wealthier than the next three countries including China and second only to the entire EU.
Ignoring the strange diversions this thread has taken and returning to the thrust of the OP: Yes, this is an almost inconceivably massive disaster, yes, it is worthy of comment, but no, it is not unprecedented, and, no, “the government” (the US and other Western governments) are not ignoring it.
From news reports in the UK there were immediate offers of help from most developed countries but the Chinese said, “Thank you, but not at the moment.”, although I believe they did accept aid teams from other countries in the region (Japan?). As **Antonious Block ** noted this is not the first major disaster in China (apart from the massive ones listed from the past they have frequent floods, typhoons, and smaller earthquakes) and they are pretty well prepared and trained.
Also as noted, rehousing 5 million in country of 1 billion plus is not the same as rehousing 5 million in country of 60 million or even 300 million, particularly as the expectations are one hell of a lot lower than in the West.
I am not sure why this event should open people’s eyes to the suffering of those less fortunate than ourselves any more than any other reported incident of people suffering, whether in China, Myanmar, or the USA. Numbers aren’t the point - suffering happens to each individual - and I don’t think most people only wake up when they get over the million mark.
If you want a topic for debate try the contrast in the responses of the governments of China and Myanmar to the equivalent offers of help from the outside world.
Where did you find this man? I use the drudge report for my news. I can’t believe I missed this. Does that mean there’s hope for us all? I pray it does.
It’s not exactly a secret. Just search Google News for bush china earthquake offer or some such combination.
No. PBS is a national broadcasting company that has local affiliates-just like CBS, ABC, FOX, and NBC.
