Change in ATMB/ Pit forum descriptions (discussion)

The current announcement is

  1. This should get the page views for ATMB up.

  2. It’s a well-intentioned response to a real issue. Some people want to make remarks in a non-flaming way. It’s not easy to be perceived as doing that in the Pit and some people don’t like the Pit.

  3. I hope you have a good handle on how you’re going to deal with what happens to threads that start appropriately for ATMB, then veer off a tad. Are you going to (a) close them; (b) move them to the Pit; © suggest that a particular poster starts a Pit thread; (d) delete an offending post and privately suggest that the poster starts a Pit thread if it’s a once off; or (e) warn the poster?

You’ll have to lay down some markers pretty quickly. And carefully.

The danger is that a thread will start off fine but someone will post something a little bit vituperative or rambunctious and you’ll end up either moving lots of stuff to the Pit; having parallel ATMB and Pit threads; or excluding some people from the discussion based on difficult - and difficult and time-consuming to defend - judgments about how civilised they’ve been.

And, of course, there’ll be those who are inclined to play on these things.

I think that whilst this is well intentioned, you may be setting yourselves up for either a mess or having two Pits.

Most of the above are possible. Probably in this order of frequency: (b), (c), (a), and (e). If we deleted a post, it wouldn’t be for something related to this.

Again, probably the first two, and we’ve got plans in place to deal with that stuff.

Indeed. Nothing new about that.

Bold move, administrators. I don’t like it. It’s crap.

So I guess this means the “We wuv you” threads get to safely stay in ATMB from now on?

We have of course had considerable discussion before making this change. We recognize that there will be gray areas and probably some rough spots.

In general, we expect Great Debates type standards to prevail. That is, you can be critical of an action (“that was a dumb decision”) but not be personally insulting (“that moderator is a moron”). Discussion may sometimes become heated, but we will expect reasonable civility to be maintained.

If you want to call us morons, you’ll still have the Pit available.

So what is the problem with that? Would you not prefer to see the Pit reserved for hostility? We already move faux Pittings to MPSIMS, so why not permit some complimewnts, here, while allowing rage to be the norm in the Pit?

Yes, but people will be free to make negative comments in them. That’s why that thread was moved to the Pit, to allow for such comments.

I like it. There should be a place where we can have spirted discussion about the board we spend so much time on. Someplace where people don’t feel the need to call you a douchebag just because you disagree with them. If it is in the Pit then someone always feels the need to make it personal or bring in old history.

I’m not sure I understand. With this forum change would you still move threads that start out that way? I would think not.

No need to get all touchy tomndebb, just asking a question. Remember what forum we’re in.

No need. If the thread gets out of hand, we’ve got all of the options identified in post 2.

No, since it would no longer be necessary. The only reason we moved it was to permit people to make negative comments if they so desired. Since they will now be able to do so in ATMB, there will be no reason to move them (as long as negative comments remain civil).

Likewise, if anyone happens to start a thread in the Pit for the purpose of praising the administration, we would now move it to ATMB.

I am hardly displaying “touchiness.” I simply asked you a question. Your post did not make any sense, in context, and I was curious as to the explanation.

Threads that turn into hate fests will be moved to the Pit or closed. Threads that include spirited discussions that remain civil can stay here. If you think that love fests should be moved to MPSIMS, then ask that question rather than snidely asking if they are going to remain here. (I do not recall that being a central part of the staff discussion since it remains pretty rare. :stuck_out_tongue: )

Clarity is your friend.

You’d have been fine with out that last parting snark, Tom

No snark. Had his question been clear, he would gotten a clearer answer, sooner.

My question was quite clear and answered quite quickly. Don’t know what you’re on about.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Thank god you jumped in the thread. My questions were both answered within 20 minutes and tomndeb’s “you got a problem with that?” does indeed sound touchy. What exactly does the rolleyes add to the discussion?

So, this is a live demonstation of the kind of threads that might eventually need to be moved?

I love performance art.

And here’s a perfect example of a conversation that belongs in the Pit, not ATMB.

How is my end of the conversation inappropriate?
