A year ago at 14:24 local China time, the Wenchuan earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale hit a dippy little town in the foothills near the Provicial Capital of Chengdu. This earthquake killed at least 69,000 people, with nearly 20,000 still unaccounted for.
That day and several weeks afterwards, the Chinese came together as a people and a country. The outpouring of sympathy and support both within China and internally was astounding.
I had originally wanted to write something poetic but not up to the task.
Ironically enough, the mundane, the pointless and the banal rule on this anniversary. China Bambina’s third grade observance of the 1 year anniversary was an earthquake practice drill. Still, for a few short weeks, the Chinese and world pulled together to be greater than themselves.
