China gov't demolishes sex theme park before it opens

Didn’t see any mention of this on the boards, so I thought I’d mention it. Chinese government shuts down Love Land, which included

Not so surprising, really. I’m surprised it got off the ground at all. However, I wasn’t aware of some of the hypocracy surrounding sex in China.

which allows situations like this

And I thought the US had backward sexual attitudes.

What’s weird is they had a Sex Museum for a long time. They even sold dildos in the gift shop.

They were probably coated with lead and fatal after prolonged use.

Souvenirs, no doubt.

What’s with all the spambots recently?

Not unlike the hypocrisy in the United States.

Spambots aren’t like hypocrisy?

ETA: Oh, I didn’t notice those posts were deleted.

One of the incidents mentioned happened in my own beautiful Chinese hometown!

Attitudes towards sex in China are complicated. I wouldn’t be so quick to simply label it “hypocrisy” or “backwards.” There are just such vast cultural differences that it’s hard to make value judgments like that. There are some relationships that simply mean a different thing in China than it does in the west. You don’t mean exactly that same thing when you talk about your “husband” or “girlfriend” or “mistress.” There are a whole different set of expectations (for example, the wives of these husbands with mistresses quite often have their own boy toys.) And nobody here approves of sex with 13 year olds. It’s caused quite an uproar.

One thing to remember is that is still a very patriarchal and conformist society with rather strict gender roles. The closest cultural reference would be America in the 1950s. And really, it’s not a whole lot more “hypocritical” or "backwards’ than we were. Given the vast changes this country has seen in, say, the last thirty years, I wouldn’t be so surprised it doesn’t exactly resemble our own.

Anyway, Chinese culture drives me absolutely up the wall sometimes, but you can’t just jump all over it whenever anyone brings it up. We probably couldn’t get a sex park built in Alabama, either.

You wouldn’t call sexual attitudes toward sex in the US in the 50s hypocritical or backward?
