Eh. Chinas per capita GDP has grown from about $150 in 1978 to about $8,000 now. They could be at Taiwanese levels of GDP in the 2030s (about $20,000 nominal per capita GDP).
China did have a lot of problems, they missed the industrialization boat and had Mao screw things up. But ever since the late 70s they have been on a trajectory of growth and they may catch up to western nations in a few decades.
A better metaphor is China was ahead, then fell behind, then started rapidly catching up senior year.
China is now the 2nd largest economy, 2nd biggest R&D spender, #1 investor in alternative energy, #2 investor in deep learning machine intelligence, etc.

Seriously, I wouldn’t bash Chinese culture, I’m an avid student of the writing system. But give any moral weight to the official propaganda of a govt with more blood on its hands than the Nazi’s or Soviet Communists, but happens to have survived in power, not so much. But of course it’s a relationship the US still has to carefully manage; they are the dictators in charge there, in a very major country.

Well we will decline at some point – every nation and culture has. We have not been divinely annointed to prevail eternally. And considering the span of human history, China was ahead of the West for far longer than it has been the other way around, and the dominance of the West after 1500 is not somehow intrinsecally predestined or irreversible either. Humility is a virtue even if we ***are ***ahead right now.
