We’re entering the classic SDMB “Slaves in British Colonies in Africa had more rights than free black men in America” territory again.
People who closely follow what is happening WRT China right now already know this story is probably not BS, as in it has been happening in many cities worldwide. It seems that you don’t closely follow what is happening, so it’s a bit weird to me that you have such a strong opinion on this matter, but OK.
It is a criminal offence to threaten death or bodily injury to someone or their family. I don’t know why you think it’s OK.
If you are at all interested just open youtube and type in “Chinese police overseas” and watch any video that comes up. It might take a while to find all the relevant ones but by the end things should be clearer.
That sounds like a terrible way to learn about such things. Do you have a reputable cite for the things you are claiming hinting vaguely at?
What is “it” in this sentence? As noted above, it is routine for countries to have members of their police present in other countries, we do it ourselves. If these people are committing crimes on our soil, it’s a matter for our local law enforcement to handle.
But the link in the OP is about Republican lawmakers sending a letter to the White House demanding answers to why this is being allowed. THAT is nothing more than propaganda, the typical Republican nothing burger scandal mongering that they’ve been doing for a decade or more. As proof, you will note that the letter to the WH contains zero evidence of a single person in the US being mistreated by these Chinese officers. Z.E.R.O.
I guess it depends on what you mean by “mistreated”, I guess. Conversations with Chinese and Chinese-Americans in this country along the lines of “Wouldn’t it be horrible if something happened to your friends and/or family back home?” are almost impossible to prove, especially when we have no way to offer protection to said family and/or friends. Would you classify such as mistreatment?
Absolutely. This isn’t a court of law, we don’t have to deal with that level of rigor, but I would demand that a letter from lawmakers to the WH contain something more than “grave concerns” about “purported” behavior that the Chinese Government “could” do.
Tell me what they are doing, not what you think they could be doing.
I got $50 that says Jim Banks did not bother to contact his colleague Rep. Adriano Espaillat, to find out if any residents of NYs 13th district (where this place is) have expressed concerns about their behavior before penning a letter to Biden. Why? Because we all know that nothing about this letter has anything to do with solving a problem.
I don’t know what you consider a reputable cite. I trust people with feet on the ground more than major news distributors these days. Don’t know about you.
And I trust major news distributors (except one) more than I trust some random guy on the internet.
I also know that Republican politicians have a long established history of telling lies. So when a group of Republican politicians make a public announcement, I assume there’s a good chance it’s a lie. The Republican party has about as much credibility as the Chinese government does.
Ok, doing Isamu’s work for him, the linked video is from Voice of America. It is discussing a report from “Safeguard Defenders” which <Googles Furiously> is available here.
The actual events they cite took place in Spain and Serbia.
They also claim,
" New tools for “persuasion” operations laid down on paper, including denying the target’s children in China the right to education , and other limitations on family members"
I haven’t read the full report, but if Safeguard Defenders is legit, it looks like more than just fearmongering.
So, is Safeguard Defenders legit?
Who is that, and why should I believe what he says?
Look, there might be a there there, but linking without comment to a random 15 minute video feeding into the rage machine isn’t helping us get at the truth here.
I’m sure this activity goes on in the Chinese community in NYC whether or not these ‘Police Stations’ are allowed. I can understand concerns about the practice but I’m not getting a clear picture from this thread about what they actually do.
The details are in the video. You don’t have to believe anything I post. You have freedom to have your own opinions. I’m glad to clarify that for you.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m making a good faith effort to determine the facts here and so far it looks like there might be something to be concerned about. But, posting videos from unnamed sources without comment isn’t helping me to get there.
If you want to post a video to support your position, first give a synopsis why this particular person is trustworthy, what it is they say in the video that’s relevant, and how it helps support your case. Then I have some context on whether the video is worth engaging or fact-checking.
