Choir Programme for 2005

My choir has finalised its programme for 2005 and there are some very interesting concerts coming up, as well as some old faithfuls. We’ll be doing:

  • a Beethoven gala in March. This is a re-enactment of a concert that Beethoven himself conducted in Vienna on 22 December 1808. For the choir, it will mean two performances singing the *Gloria * and *Sanctus * from the Mass in C and the Choral Fantasy.

  • Two performances of Sir Michael Tippett’s *A Child of Our Time * in May to celebrate the centenary of the composer’s birth.

*John Adams’ *El Niño * in August. This is a work that I don’t know, but I’ve really loved the other works by Adams that I’ve heard.

  • the highlight of the year for me - in September, *The Damnation of Faust * by Berlioz, with Charles Dutoit as conductor. The performances (three of them) should be fantastic.

  • Three performances of the Beethoven *Choral Symphony * in October.

  • Carmina Burana in November, but in a re-orchestrated version for two pianos and percussion.

  • The traditional four perforamnces of *Messiah * in December.

It will be quite a busy year!

I was in a production of this at Indiana University a couple years back, and it was wonderful. It’s great music, and if you get good soloists it’s quite fun.

And we’ve now had the Fauré *Requiem * added to the programme in March.

Oh no!! I hadn’t realised it was the Tippett centenary!!
