Cholesterol, Statins and CoQ10

You are not my doctor, I am not your patient… yadda yadda

I suffer from natually high cholesterol and have been prescribed various statin drugs for the past 20 years. I am happy to report that they work well for me and have dropped by cholesterol down, well into the ‘normal’ range, with no apparent side effects. My liver function is tested regularly and everything appears fine.

Now for the question.

A few months ago I read an article (no cite) that said that patients that take statins should also be taking CoQ10 supplements. I found some other online sources that more or less agreed with the article and I mentioned it to my doctor during a visit. My doctor agreed that it was a ‘good idea’, but fell short of recommending that I start taking supplements.

I decided to go ahead and start taking them and I have been taking them now for the past few months. I haven’t noticed any difference, but I’m not sure there is anything to notice. These things aren’t cheap, so I am reluctant to take them the rest of my life just because it is a ‘good idea’.

A few questions for the teeming masses:

  1. If you take statins where you aware of the need to take CoQ10?

  2. If you take statins do you also take CoQ10?

  3. What dosage of CoQ10 are you taking?

  4. Where do you normally buy your CoQ10?
