Holy Wotan, who’d WANT stories true to the mythology?
I haven’t been following this movie yet, so it’s the first I’ve heard that Branaugh is directing. That should be interesting. Is this coming out before or after Captain America?
You all are missing the most important element. It’s subtle, I missed it the first time, but it’s there. He’s strawberry blond! That means he’s sort of blond to match the comics, & sort of redheaded to match the mythological tradition! I applaud this.
Nope, I’m sorry, but Thor is first and foremost a superhero. If he were an actual Norse god, would he really care about mortals? The Thor of myth had no interests beyond drinking, eating and smashing things. The film isn’t about him, it’s about the Marvel superhero.
I’ve seen Branaugh’s Frankenstein and Hamlet that he directed. I can’t say that I think he’s a terribly great director. Something about his cinematography and directing makes everything feel like a play, with boundaries that are limited to the average dimension of a stage.
Oh, no kidding - explaining Sleipnir, for example, would be difficult to keep kid-friendly…
In the original mythology Thor was red haired and bearded. I say keep the beard.
As for the armor suit - it may be something worn during filming that is later CGI enhanced for the film. They did that for Iron Man - the actual suit(s) used during filming were later digitally tweaked to look better. They may be doing the same thing here.
Nitpick - it’s Branagh not Branaugh
Must…resist…using this line… to my Confirmation students when they have Biblical questions…
I’m pro-beard having looked at it. Not bad and better than what I was expecting.
I agree with half of what you’re saying. The Mighty Thor is first and foremost a superhero based on a Norse god.
Thor the Aesir, however cared very deeply for his people, the farmers and commoners.
Except when those fuckers broke a bone in one of his magic goats. Then he was all about the smiting, and would have killed the whole family except they gave him their children as slaves.
Who wouldn’t? They’re a hoot.
Especially as told here:
