I hadn’t caught an episode of SNL in some time until tonight, and boy does that show suck. Especially Chris Kattan, he is a perfect clone of several hyperactive, effeminate thespians I knew in high school. Sometimes he makes me laugh, “A Night At the Roxbury” had its moments, but most of the time I have to cringe at his all too familiar antics. SNL has really fallen on hard times. The current cast isn’t fit to sniff the collective asses of the likes of Akroyd, Murray, Belushi, Murphy, or even Myers, Farley, Spade and Sandler for that matter. I say ditch the entire cast (except for Will Farell and Daryl Hammond) and find some people who are actually funny and not just zany morons.
Well, Tina Fey is an excellent writer and does a kickass job on Weekend Update. But fire everyone else. They’re not funny anymore (assuming they once were).
I was thinking about starting a rant just like this. SNL really has been sucking these last couple years. The one where John Stewart hosted was pretty funny though, but I doubt that it’s possible for him to not be funny. When I want good SNL I watch the reruns on Comedy Central. And what is up with the musical guests? I haven’t seen one that I enjoyed at all in a long time.
I don’t even understand why they still HAVE musical guests. I can understand in the pre-MTV days when seeing a band play on TV was a novelty, but now I think its just time for everyone to make a sammich and go to the bathroom. Ditto for late night talk shows. FORGET THE MUSIC already. It’s shoved down our faces on every other channel all day long.
You say that like it’s a bad thing.
I really liked Kattan in “Goth Talk.” It was such a good sketch that I liked it despite the presence of Molly Shannon, Evil Queen of Unfunny.
Hmmm… do you suppose they are fit to sniff the collective asses of Radner, Newman, Curtain?
<damn kids…sexist twits…grumble grumble…>
Yes Yes YES on all counts!
I agree. I haven’t watched it in years. and the ones I did watch were stupid… it seemed that when they finally did do a funny skit, they carried it on too long until it was no longer funny at all.
mad tv isn’t funny all the time either… they have their moments… but sometimes I watch it high off my ass and i can’t even laugh then… like the mrs. swann thing… what is so funny about this, except that it’s not funny?
I miss the old saturday night live… kids in the hall are funny too.
I’m trying to remember the last time people didn’t complain that SNL wasn’t as good as it used to be. Darn it if I can’t remember a time when people didn’t complain that SNL wasn’t as good as it used to be. They’ve been doing this since the 80’s so far as I know. And yet the show stays on the air.
Marc
Exactly, 100%, correct. I’ve heard bitching and moaning about SNL since Reagan was in office. Especially about how no human being will ever, in all their attempts, approach the level of humor of John Belushi.
I’m sorry the guy is dead. But John Belushi was a stupid, drunken, drugged-out loser who only excelled at playing a stupid, drunken, drugged-out loser. And he never made me even crack a smile - not once. Not on SNL, not in any movie, not IRL.
I also agree 100% with voguevixen. If I want to see “Pack O’ Assgoblins” do their latest hip-hop number, I can see it on MTV, MTV2, MTV Europe, VH1, or even download their damn video from Kazaa.
The quality of the show varies tremendously. I’ve seen nights that were exceptionally well put-together, and ones where I’d rather get drunk and watch Davey and Golliath to get a laugh.
Will Farrell can be really, really, good - but sometimes his sick humor really puts me off too.
For extreme suckitude, you need only speak two words:
Rachel Dratch
Hell, Denny Dillon was funnier and she sucked gorilla ass.
Will they ever cancel this show?
I know that it’s always been less funny than the first few seasons, but now I must say that for the most part it really sucks. The only really funny newer sketch I can think of is Celebrity Jeopardy, which if you haven’t seen you really really must. It is that funny. Will Ferrel as Trebeck, “Sean Connery” making fun of Trebeck… Sooooooo funny.
yeah, but they ran that sketch into the ground too. only the first three are funny, and the third is really getting into the “eh” levels.
Indeed he does. The man absolutely sets my teeth on edge. It drives me crazy that he has a whole raft of recurring characters (Mr. Peepers, gibberish guy, Night at the Roxbury guy, etc) and I Hate. Every. Damned. One. Of. Them. Except he was maybe mildly funny in the old Goth Talk sketches.
Darrell Hammond, otoh, kicks ass. Will Farrell would be worth having just for the Celebrity Jeopardy. And Tina Fey…very talented, plus so easy on the eyes she is giving me a glasses fetish :D.
And let me chime in in the chorus of agreement about musical guests. I have never in my life sat through an SNL musical set. When I got Comedy Central and saw that they were running hourlong versions of the show, I assumed they were cutting them out. But noooo! They actually show both musical sets in every damned ep, and cut sketches to get it down to an hour. The buck futters!
Well, according to this SNL Episode Guide it was probably October 18, 1975, when people viewed the second episode of SNL ever aired and said “It was much better last week with George Carlin as host…”
The musical guests and the hosts for the past few seasons have been no-talent teenage hacks like Britney Spears, the Dawson’s Creek people, and so on.
IMO the golden years were during the first Bush administration, with Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jan Huchs, Jon Lovitz, and Kevin Nealon. But the musical guests sucked even then.
Jello, I could not agree more about how the hosts are all teen pop culture icons with no talent. I did, however, hear about a funny sketch with Britney Spears talking about Phish. I never saw it though so I really don’t know how funny it actually was. I wouldn’t be too upset if they fired the entire cast and took a year off to rework the show. Hell I wouldn’t mind watching actual funny reruns for a year. As for musical guests in the early 90s, there were some good ones. Nirvana played a couple times, and I think Counting Crows did once. I know there are some other strong bands that played in the early 90s. The musical guests only started to really suck when rap, metal, alt rock that all sounds the same, and bullshit teeny-bopper music became the only new music that gets air time.
Sorry Stoid, I didn’t realize I neglected to mention any female cast members, I just picked the people that came to mind quickest.
I guess its clear that the show has been on a downward slide with no end in sight. And yet they still keep pumping out the crappy movie spinoffs.
Was it any good when Ian McKellen was the host? I only found out that he had hosted when it was past tense.
I haven’t been a regular viewer in years, and now only watch when I know in advance that someone I really like will host. The last two times I watched was when The Rock was on, and recently, Hugh Jackman. The show does seem to have gotten very gay (sorry, matt), based on what I saw, and have picked up by osmosis. I did not enjoy seeing The Rock in a dress, nor did I appreciate seeing HJ being made to prance around in almost every sketch. But there might have been reasoning behind that. A big macho Samoan in a dress is funny (to some people, not me). A slightly less big, but masculine Aussie, who once played the baddest mutant of them all, acting swishy, is funny (to some people, not me). But since McKellen really is gay, perhaps the cast and writers figured it would be insulting to ask him to play camp, and actually gave him something creative to do instead. Did they?
