Chris Perry-The Real Heisman Winner!

Chris Perry of Michigan answered the bell in all the big games down the stretch: Michigan State (at East Lansing), Purdue, Ohio State. His one bad statistical game, v. Oregon, came when Michigan fell behind by a lot of points and had to abandon the run.

This loser putz from Oklahoma (I refuse to refer to him by his name) CHOKED BIG TIME in the biggest game of the season.

This is what will happen in the bowl games: Chris Perry will lead Michigan to victory over USC in the Rose, while Loser Putz pulls another CHOKE JOB in the Sugar. Then all will know who the real Heisman winner should have been…Number 23 in the Maize and Blue, Christopher Perry of The University of Michigan!

Oh, and the guy from Pitt? Give me a break! How many games did Pitt lose, and did they even come close to winning the Big Least? Perry led his team to FIRST PLACE in the toughest conference in college football.

At first I thought that you misspelled the best player in college football’s name, that being L-A-R-R-Y–F-I-T-Z-G-E-R-A-L-D, but upon reading your entire OP, I realized that your delusional state must have been affected by that sham win by Jason White.

The real Heisman winner should have been the guy that almost singlehandedly provided all of the offensive output for his team by selflessly throwing his body around and risking severe injury, and this as a Sophomore. Where was your boy Perry as a Soph? Riding the pine, that’s where.

Fitzgerald got jobbed because he’s not a quarterback, he didn’t return kicks, and he’s a Sophomore. Period.

Perry did not exactly “ride the pine” as a sophomore…he ran for almost 500 yards. It is not his fault that Michigan is always loaded at running back!

If providing the bulk of your team’s offensive output is that important, then the national MVP for women’s college basketball so far should be Jennifer Smith of Michigan, who is averaging well over 20 points per game for a team that often struggles to score 60 or 70. But what do you want to bet that someone from a traditional power of the women’s game like U-Conn or Tennessee will end up being chosen?

See Airman’s thread in IMHO for why I think the real Heisman winner wasn’t even in New York on Saturday evening:

Philip Rivers, baby.

I thought Fitzgerald should’ve taken it, too, but taken in totality, I can’t say that Jason White’s season was wholly undeserving. 40 touchdowns and 8 picks on the number one team in the country is going to win the Heisman ninety-nine out of a hundred times, fair or not.

I don’t think he really choked. He didn’t have a very good game, but he didn’t CHOKE BIG TIME. They got jumped on by a good team, never got it going on the ground, and K State got to the quarterback too much to do anything. He did throw for 300 yards even though he probably didn’t get to set his feet on a pass all night, and if 300 yards against a top ten team is your worst game, you’ve got a pretty solid case built for yourself.

Quack, I read your post in the other thread, and I’m curious: what sets Rivers ahead of White, in your mind? I saw most of his games, and I was at the FSU game- he was very impressive that day especially. But when two guys have similar stats, don’t you think the guy in the national championship race should get the edge over the guy whose team lost four times in conference?

White got lucky in that half of his votes were in before he choked in his division Championship.

But then what do you expect from the Heisman? Only 3 of the last 10 have had any impact on Pro Football.

Yeah, he got soooo lucky  that he passed for 3777 yds, 40 TDs, and had only 8 INTs.

40 fucking touch downs! That’s a stat worth repeating.

A good player won. So it wasn’t your favorite. Deal with it.

The Heisman is retarded. They should all be proud cause they are all kick butt players. Also it can be pretty meaningless to a player’s career. So many great players in the NFL didn’t win it, and so many heisman winners are nowhere to be found.

Since when is the Heisman intended to project success in the pros? It’s supposed to award the most outstanding college player in a given year. That concept itself is impossible, but one of the better players always gets the award.

White himself didn’t choke in the KSU game. His line got whipped by the KSU defense, and he didn’t have too much of a chance. Did Rivers, Fitzgerald, Perry, et. al. choke in each of their team’s multiple lossess, or did the whole team not play well?

I think White was as good a choice as any, better than most, and that’s about as good as it’s going to get with the Heisman.

Jimmy, I think that Rivers did more with less than Jason White. There is no doubt in my mind that if Rivers was playing QB for Oklahoma and White was playing QB for NCST that OU would’ve been undefeated (including the Big 12 Champ.) and NCST would’ve been 3-9.
To answer your question, I think it’s analogous to the situation of two soldiers. One of them is surrounded by competent men who can think on their feet and react effectively. The other man is surrounded by comatose teacup poodles. If both have equal numbers in accuracy and performance, who put up the better performance?
Rivers was the heart and soul of that team in the way that White wasn’t for OU. At the postseason awards, OU had the top DB, top LB and their top DT is expected to be a top 5 pick. Not to mention that Clayton is a great college WR. Rivers has had no big time players surrounding him (aside from T.A. McClendon who’s had injury issues and showed spotty production). The only reason that NCST was 7-5 is that the defense was horrible. Absolutely horrible. Rivers put up a combined 82 points against FSU and OSU but NCST lost because the defense gave up a combined 94 points.

Oh, and he lost 4 conference games with passer ratings of 163.8, 144.6, 123.9, and 201.7. In those losses he threw 9 TDs to 3 INTs and averaged 9.2 YPA. I think it’s pretty clear that Rivers didn’t lose those games.

Chris Perry shouldn’t even have won the Doak Walker award, or whatever that RB award is. Sproles from KSU was way better.

White should have been given the “Geno Toretta” award, for being the QB on the nations best team and getting all the votes by default, then going to be undrafted.

Easy, hero! I think the boys from SC have something to say about that! The guy who should have won the trophy might be in Pasadena, but he won’t be wearing stinkin’ blue! Some call him “Matt”…

BCS stands for (illegitimate child) + (crowing rooster) + (Tootsie Pops)

Hey now. The shade of blue worn by the Wolverines is not “stinkin’ blue”. I can only assume you were confusing Michigan with UCLA.

Way better? I don’t buy that for a second. Arguably better, sure, but the case isn’t very clearcut. Let’s look at the numbers.

Sproles
Games 14

Rushing
Carries 293
Yards 1948
Yards per game 139
Average 6.6
TDs 15

Receiving
Catches 22
Yards 282
Yards per game 20
Average 12.8
TDs 2

Perry
Games 12

Rushing
Carries 315
Yards 1589
Yards per game 132
Average 5.0
TDs 17

Receiving
Catches 42
Yards 366
Yards per game 31
Average 8.7
TDs 2

I include receiving stats because catching screens and outlets is part and parcel of being an effective tailback. However, even ignoring Perry’s edge in that department the numbers are basically a wash. Sproles has higher total yards basically because he played two extra games, but has two fewer TDs even with the extra games. It might also be noted that Perry is a noted pass protector, his blocking abilities frequently commented upon. I have not the familiarity with Sproles to know his effectiveness in that department, but his stature doesn’t really lend itself to slowing down D linemen. Of course, Sproles is a dangerous kick returner, while Perry doesn’t appear on special teams, but while this is relevant to the Heisman, it is not relevant to the Doak Walker.

It is perfectly reasonable to think that Sproles is the better (college) running back. It is not reasonable to think that the difference is great.

No love in the BBQ Pit for my man Ben Roethlisberger, from my alma mater Miami University?

Best QB in the country, better than Rivers (yuck - NC State, boo!!!) or White or Eli Manning.

Please god, let’s not go here.

I’m a Michigan fan, and would have been pleased to see Perry win. But is your memory so short that you cannot remember the brouhaha over the Woodson win? There was such LOUD whining from certain quarters in Tennessee–ugh, really unpleasant. Let us not follow that poor example.
