Christianity 101 Questions from an Ex-Mormon

Does your branch of Christianity believe in the Trinity? “They” seems pretty appropriate in that case.

Which congregations do this? I’m thinking it could get awfully awkward and redundant.

Those Christian denominations that believe in the Holy Trinity don’t believe the term means three separate beings, so “they” would not be accurate in that case, either.

I have nonbinary and trans friends and have trouble with their pronouns. I mostly use their names, and avoid pronouns. You get used to it. And in liturgy where someone had time to think about how to cast the sentence, I’m sure you can manage in a mostly-elegant way.

I have known a lot of ELCA congregations (including mine) who try to avoid the male pronoun for God and have said “Godself”. And I have heard a version of the blessing that says instead of “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” goes “Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer”. It’s not necessarily a rule, but a practice that some people emulate.

Though a really awkward version of the blessing that I recently heard used by an ELCA Mission Congregation was “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Mother of us all”.

Sounds like the God of Weebles.
