Christmas 2013: what'd you get?

Anything good? Are you particularly proud of anything you gave?

New Dansko clogs, new pajamas, the Urban Decay Naked eyeshadow palette, and a brick of tea which is definitely the coolest of my gifts, but we can’t find a good way to break it apart. My husband brought me one of his pliers, then took them back because he was afraid I’d break them on it.

I got a new refrigerator.

I gave my fiance a new food processor. I know, it’s not sexy, but it’s what she wanted.

I got a fifth of Glenfiddich single-malt scotch. The wife got a fifth of Chambord black-raspberry liqueur and some perfume.

Boot socks, the Superplexus Original and Superplexus Epic twin pack, a complete suit(including nice dress shoes and 2 bow ties), Barnes And Noble gift cards, Amazon.com gift card, and a bunch of lottery card scratch-offs(two buck-yay!).

I got a kitten calendar, some makeup, a bottle of wine, a vase, a travel pillow, some interesting items of clothing, and an elephant figurine that doubles as a pencil cup.

Sattua, maybe soak it in a lot of hot water? :stuck_out_tongue:

between the two of us, a couple of serious bread baking books, a yummy- looking modern Israeli cookbook, way too much chocolate, a board game, a sword- shaped umbrella, a propane torch, a pair of earrings, a nice sturdy canvas bag, and I feel like I’m forgetting something.

Salud!

I got a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Also a new glass to drink it out of, and lots of new reading material. Now I just need a nice cozy fire to sit next to, and I’m set for a week or so

Best fiend: A Cajun food basket. Gumbo mix, étouffée mix, dirty rice mix, Cajun spice, hot sauce, Zatarain’s Creole mustard, hurricane mix.

Boss: Almond Roca cream, chocolate-covered macadamia nuts.

Coworker: Chocolate-covered dried fruits.

Lucky bastard. You can’t find Laphroaig in Thailand, but I did sample it once in a riverside single-malt bar in Phnom Penh. Good stuff.

TheKid, flush with money from working full time, spoiled me rotten: iPod touch, case, arm band case, iTunes card, pajamas, super lux bath towels, a small Calphalon pot with lid, and a tool box. And chocolate. I am one lucky Mom.

My Mom said she wasn’t buying anyone anything, yet when we went to her house yesterday there were three flats of Smart Water for us.

Ah, lovely Laphroaig. I considered that as my birthday gift to myself, but went with Talisker instead–wasn’t in the mood for Laphroaig’s medicinal goodness.

For gifts I got from other people, the highlights were Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails and a folding bread proofer thingy. The former seems likely to empty my wallet and fill my bar, while the latter should encourage me to get back into proper baking.

A 4x4 AND a 5x5 Rubiks cube, Doctor Sleep, and the Farmers of the Moor expansion for Agricola. And a $25 Regal Cinemas gift card.

Bought myself a Kindle HDX too, so overall a very good Christmas. Usually I get at least a couple duds, but I really liked all my gifts this year.

Talisker was another one I sampled at that bar in Phnom Penh. Also not available in Thailand. I think Johnny Walker must have lobbied the Thai government to limit scotch imports.

Neil deGrasse Tyson sent my son his Inexplicable Universe lectures on dvd.

I got the flu. 104.6 last night

My son bought me a machete. It replaces one on permanent loan to his brother. They’re great for rough yard work in places that have gone to seed.

My second and third best gifts were a Fender Mustang amp and a Garmin Oregon 450 GPSr.

My best gift was spending another Christmas with SWMBO.

Got: Everything I asked for.

Gave: Everything that was asked.

Surprises: None. But that doesn’t mean the gifts will be any less enjoyable. In fact, more so, because it’s exactly what I wanted.

Bonus: No hassles of dealing with returns.

So much scotch, eh? I gave my husband a bottle of Lagavulin 16, and my parents gave him a bottle of Clynelish 14. He favors Islay-style so the Lagavulin is kind of an apotheosis for him. Clynelish is the first Highland malt he’s had, I believe, so that will be interesting when he gets around to it.

My brother gave me Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. 22 on DVD. My parents gave me a French press, Adios Hemingway by Leonardo Padura, and some nice new shirts. They ordered a second Padura book that won’t arrive until next month for whatever reason. Technically those were Hanukkah gifts but they were in fact given way on December 15th, just before my dad’s birthday. On Christmas my girlfriend gave me a sweater and two books I’d mentioned - Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh and Going to Meet the Man by James Baldwin - and a bar of “manly” Duke Cannon soap. The soap was the most meaningful gift because it was her way of telling me I should feel comfortable having my own things at her place.
