That’s actually a great suggestion. I’ve been to Mass more than once, but never for Christmas. Catholics really know how to do it up right, crazy-huge pipe organ and all, so I may look for a big church in San Jose or something, that sounds really cool.
Well, of course I’ll talk to him. I’m not sure we’ll see each other that day (this is mostly up to him, of course I want to see him!), but definitely we’ll say hey.
I always organize a dinner at a local restaurant for our holiday “strays” (of which I am one) for my atheist meetup group. Every year, we snag quite a few new attendees for the very reasons you’ve mentioned. People tell me they have a great time, and I believe them because they keep coming back.
I hope you find something wonderful to do, squeegee! If you lived closer, I’d drag you along to my thing.
ETA: If you go to the Catholic mass, at least you’ll get your aerobic exercise, too.
This is completely self indulgent and on the last Christmas I spent alone is what I did
Couple of days ahead made a list of like 5 or 6 movies I liked and requested them from the library. Also requested books I wanted to read. Then I went to the store and bought ingredients to make my favorite pig out food (cheeseball if you really want to know.) And I bought what I loved to drink (don’t ask - it’s embarassing.)
When the library had my stuff ready to pick up I went and got the movies and books and went home to make the food.
Come Christmas day, I slept late, put on sweats, went downstairs and sat on my couch and watched my movies, read my books, ate my favorite pig out food and drank my embarrassing beer to my hearts content. With the phone off.
IT WAS WONDERFUL!
I’ll be thinking about you this Christmas squeegee - hope whatever you decide to do brings you warmth and happiness and peace!
You might be able to eat at a Tex-mex place too. One of the things my family does is drive around and look at Christmas lights some years, and there are often some Tex-Mex places open. (I kind of figure that they’re owned by Jehovah’s Witnesses–I’ve met several Latinos that were JW.)
Since you say there’s no Meetup meeting up yet for xmas, join up with a Singles Meetup group and plan an activity yourself. You’ll be filling a large hole and people will be happy to join you.
First: Think up an activity you’d like to do, such as a local hike, followed by a meal at a Chinese restaurant. What about a walk around the downtown area to view the Christmas lights? Or a nearby hill trek? Followed by the restaurant meal. Figure out the upper limit on how many people the place can accommodate. Maybe there’s a a large Chinese buffet place?
Then: Go to Meetup.com. Search for and find a larger Singles Meetup group in your area, possibly in your age range. Join it. Then, post your planned activities. You’ll probably be overwhelmed with people who want to join you.
Bonus: You’ll meet lots of new people, many of which you’ll want to meet up with again.
(There’s a middle-aged gal in my area who, whenever she wants to do something fun with others, just posts in her Meetup group where she’s going to be - usually a happy hour or some other tavern event, often on the same day. Sure enough, people come out to join her for a fun time.)
I was part of a singles group at church back then and we would do activities around this.
In many towns there will be certain restaurants that stay open like say a Waffle House because they always get a Christmas day crowd of people without ties. Maybe seek one out?
Every community has some odd Christmas day thing going on like a polar plunge. Maybe look for those.
I remember the first Christmas I spent alone shortly after my first wife and I parted ways. Wasn’t a very happy day for me but I survived it. Slept most of the day away.
If the OP is a basketball fan, Christmas is also when some of the NBA’s biggest games are played, as that is usually when games start appearing on network TV. This year’s two ABC Christmas games are Oklahoma City-San Antonio and Cleveland-Miami.
Speaking of Christmas and sports, this Christmas is the 100th anniversary of the “Christmas Truce” soccer game (it’s not clear exactly how many were played that day, although threats of being shot for “fraternizing with the enemy” prevented a repeat in later years) played between the trenches during a break in the fighting during World War I.
There was a time when Christmas Day was an important day in the movie industry, as most of the Oscar contenders would open in Los Angeles and Manhattan on that day, since it was (and still is) the last day a film could open and still be eligible for that year’s Oscars. (A few still do, which is why the occasional movie ad says, “Opens Christmas Day in Los Angeles and New York, and (some date in January) nationwide”, even though the Manhattan requirement was removed a few years ago; I think it was because so many theaters were being converted to something else because of the property values that it became harder and harder to find a theater).)
