CHRISTS MESSAGE: God Hates Religion!

There’s no need for you to argue over this. The Catholics and the Protestants are both wrong.

Judaism is the One True Faith[sub]tm[/sub]!

[sub]on a serious note, I’m working on an essay in which Screwtape gives a lecture to a class of tempters explaining that the idea of one true faith is hell’s invention. It’s a clever ploy to corrupt religion and cause hatred and death[/sub]

Re ;j

Idunno. I assumed that like :wally it was a memorial to WallyM7. A Swiss smiley was proposed but, Dopers voted to add :smack: instead. Wally was highly respected poster and Clique member  gifted with a glib tongue :stuck_out_tongue: and a gift for crafting sig lines.

If this information on smilies  does not clear up your confusion  don’t despair. :frowning: I’m sure the folks in ATMB will be more than happy  to share their surprising  wealth of knowlege (meaning that they’ll give yawn :o inducing lectures lasting until the sun cools to red  ).

Re OP

So you say. We’ll see if you mean it, or fall back into attacking Catholicism and the Pope. I’ll lay dollars to donuts that you do.

Kirk

Fall back, I mean.

Well, Kirk, you’ve certainly made your point that Catholicism is not a religion filled with hatred and lack of forgiveness like Fundamentalism!

Poly, you should know people like this well enough to know how they operate. Did you learn nothing from your years around Ghoti, Sierra, Shema, Cenimo and others?

This person came in here and attacked an innocent group of people for no reason, and is apologizing only because I wouldn’t let him get away with it.

And in any case, I demanded more than an apology, I demanded a retraction of all his statements regarding Catholicism, without which his apology is as worthless as a promise from Baghdad. He has not retracted his comparisons between Catholicism and the Pharisees, nor his statement that the Pope is “selfish.”

Kirk

Of couse I havn’t retracted those statements, I am not sorry for stating my opinion. I AM sorry my opinion offended you, that was not my intention.

Now, I DEMAND you apologize for belittling my opinions with your Catholicism! How dare you speak out against what I believe!

Your refusal to retract your bigotted lies against Catholicism says all anyone should ever need to know about you.

So REM’s Losing My Religion is a happy song for you?

Not everything. I’m also 5’ 11", I have green eyes and I enjoy playing football.

All this coupled with the fact that I disagree with Catholicism, and yes, that just about covers all that is Çyrin

:smack:

Not that you disagree. I don’t care if people disagree with Catholicism, so long as they don’t misrepresent it, which you have. Disagree all you like. Polycarp disagrees with Catholicism. I have no problem with him. Why? Because he doesn’t post lies about Catholicism. You have attacked Catholicism and attacked the pope with slanderous lies, and have refused to retract them. That’s the problem. Not the disagreement.

I have found that addressing the actual posts presented, rather than making broad claims about “how they operate” has more of a tendency to further the discussion.

I agree that I nearly spewed my drink across my monitor when I read

Especially given the misstatements and blanket condemnations with which Çyrin began this thread and has repeated on several occasions.

However, meeting such errors and ill will with hostility conjures up the risible image of two cranky schismatic bishops hurling anthemas and excommunications at each other and does little or nothing to promote the Straight Dope®–which is why we are here.

Ok, lets go back.

I “attacked” the pope…

I rember saying he was selfish… and I assume you would contend he is not… good. But still opinion.

I compared the Catholics to the Pharisees, yup.

Still MY OPINION!

Anything else?

Yeah,

how do you that neat tail on the C ?

Oh, and why not use “organized religion”, “dogma”, or “religious beaureaucracy” instead of religion?

I think that those 3 terms would much better fit the meaning you want.

Kirkland-
Since Cyrin will likely bring up saints (anti-Catholic posters usually do). I was confused by the issue myself until you and Guin explained it to H4E. I was wondering if my current understanding is correct. The saints are analogous to senators. You don’t call a senator and ask them to excercise a presidential power. You call them and ask them to to take your petition to the president. Similiarly just as the president appoints senators to various groups and committees, saints each deal with certain groups of problems.
Am I right so far?

DocCathode, I’ll take those terms into consideration, thanks…

btw, I am not planning on continuing any more discussion concerning catholicism… if there is any talk of saints in this thread, it will be you who brought it up

Ç = Alt + 0199
ç = Alt + 0231

(Use the numeric keypad.)
(And your synopsis of the Catholic view of seeking intercession from the saints is quite good for a really short version.)

Doc, forgot about your first question… sorry!

That’s a good analogy. The Saints aid extra weight to your petitions through thier prayers (the prayers of the righteous are powerful… so on so forth), but its God who does the final action.

Like if you have a rich grandmother, and are trying to get her to help you fund something (since I’m working on a student film, lets just make it a student film). Now, you can go to her with your request, and probably should. But it doesn’t hurt to call up your aunt, your grandmother’s favorite daughter, and ask her to chime in, because her coming to your cause will have a great swaying effect on the grandmother. But its still the grandmother who decides, finally, whether or not to write the check.

Not to say that God is a bank, or that God should send me a check so my friends and I can make our movie (though, God, if you do, you’ll be the coolest God ever!). Metaphors. You know, like most of the Bible.

Kirk

That’s pretty complicated. On a Mac, Ç is Shift-Option-C, and ç is just option-C. The Alt number system on Windows always seemed pretty arbitrary and convoluted.

Kirk

He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? and Simom Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 16:15-18

Peter isn’t the rock upon which the church is built. How could it have survived if it was built on man who is sinful? Jesus it talking about what Peter said - Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God. It is Jesus the church is built on, not Peter. That is a mistaken interpretation of the passage. Jesus Himself is the Rock and chief cornerstone of His church.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth into an holy temple in the Lord. Ephesians 2:19-21
