Yep. Got the warning again myself.
Don’t panic - we’re perfectly safe as long as we have adblocker, noscript, Java unintsalled, have updated our virus definitions and only post from internet cafes or through proxy servers.
As an additional measure it wouldn’t be a bad idea to send our credit card numbers to Google proactively so they can monitor all of our purchases to ensure we aren’t buying anything from a suspected ‘attack vendor’.
The other day I was walking in to my favorite store, and was dismayed to learn they have rented a space at the entrance to a pack of violent thugs and muggers, who I now have to get past in order to get inside the store. They apologized for the inconvenience though, and recommended wearing a suit of body armor when visiting the store. They have asked the thugs and bandits to please refrain from harassing their valued clients and, really, what more can they do?
The warning is back!
Yep, back again. FF 30 beta with Adblocker Plus.
I’m assuming that Jerry has switched the ads on again and that’s why the warning is back? I never see any ads (thank the gods) so it’s hard to tell.
Déjà vu all over again, Chrome & Firefox.
It’s an iPhone protected by Apple magic.
Me too but others have reported seeing ads.
Yep.
What gives?
Even though I have Adblock, it opened a new tab for an ad for their product when I clicked to ignore the warning.
I’m one of those stupid posters who use Internet Explorer as a browser. I plead old age and hard to convince to change my habits.
What are all you people talking about ? What warnings?
I got the warning tonight but not this afternoon. FF 29.0.1
I’m a member so the AdBlockPlus shouldn’t matter.
Oddly Chrome is not giving a warning. But I might be out of date, I rarely use Chrome
Nope, I’m up to Date Version 34.0.1847.137
The first time around, I got it on IE too. Just checked now, and no. But that could be because I already told the computer it’s okay.
IE doesn’t check for malware like Chrome & Firefox, so, theoretically, you could be infected while using IE.
The trade-off is too many false positives.
For those who haven’t had the pleasure, the first warning screen looks like this, and the second, like this (although the offending links may vary).
Google maintains a list of sites with potential malware issues. Chrome, Safari, and other browsers use this list, but Internet Explorer does not (Microsoft has their own list). Google has identified this site as having an issue, presumably due to the ads. Microsoft has not (yet). Interpret that as you wish based on your biases about Microsoft and Google.
Chrome, Firefox and (I think) Safari all check with a Google blacklist for sites that the Google spiders have detected malware on. Such sites cause the browser to throw up a warning page instead of the intended one, and then it’s proceed at your own risk. Thing is, Google has flagged the SDMB twice this week for malware, and it’s because of dodgy ads. People have posted up the the details already in this thread.
This really, really needs to be sorted - Google will not indefinitely keep taking a domain off the blacklist if it keeps finding malware on return visits. The ads are pulled from dodgysexbot.ru or whatever, but it’s boards.straightdope.com that gets blacklisted.
Partially correct - IE doesn’t use the same list as Google, but it does have its own blacklist. The feature in IE is called SmartScreen.
I’m getting the warning page too, but the really annoying thing is that none of the buttons work. I can’t ask for information or ignore the warnings.
There is an issue most likely with the banner ads causing Google to flag the SDMB as an attack site. Many of you using Chrome, Firefox, or Safari are receiving warning pages in your browser when you attempt to navigate to the site.
To resolve the issue the ad slots have been turned off on all pages for all users of the site. Google has been requested to review the site again for possible malware issues. If they find it clean the malware warnings will be removed.
Jerry
If the ads are off and if the ads are the source of problems, then if Google finds the site to be clean will that really mean anything useful? Serious question, no snark intended.
I assume once Google pronounces us clean, you’ll turn the malware ad back on and this will happen again?
I did receive it in IE too. Was I the only one?
