What do you know? It’s not like you were a mod or something.
Confirming, doing a search via Google I can now go straight to a page here.
I was huffing a lot of glue back then, though, so I probably just didn’t notice all those awful threads.
“…abuse that was hurled at the staff in the Pit, on an almost daily basis”: that could apply to posts rather than shiny new threads. Three to four pit threads per month could easily support that kind of volume.
I would provide irrefutable evidence, but searching google for SDMB threads scares me too much: my browser keeps delivering stern warnings. //quip!//
Yeah, I can recall two occasions when a poster used the c-word on a Mod/Admin, and both were noteworthy events. Mods being abused on an almost daily basis? Didn’t happen.
The only time I remember great abuse of a mod/admin, being called a cunt, it changed the language rules in the Pit and created the rule about mod action discussion being only in ATMB.
If these same people were being so abused on a daily basis why wasn’t the change made years earlier?
I’m sure you’re right and much of this horrifying abuse was consolidated in weekly threads rather than daily ones. What’s strange, though, is that if one goes back and just looks at thread titles, for example by using this link:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/forumdisplay.php?f=5&order=desc&page=51
It seems like one can go several pages without even seeing the staff mentioned, let alone abused via thread titles that would bring a blush to the face of the most hardened trooper. And that’s months worth of threads, which is weird given the near-daily nature of the abuse…
I’m probably just not reading the forum right, though. aldiboronti’s links will no doubt clear this misunderstanding right up.
C’mon, allow a chap a little hyperbole. This isn’t GQ. I don’t even know any troopers, hardy or otherwise. And OK, I may be remembering a couple of bad days and allowing that to colour my general recollection. I am suitably contrite. There was definitely some bad shit thrown at the staff though and it was not a rare occurrence.
I’m a big fan of hyperbole, but there comes a point where it crosses over into straight-up fiction. It’s nice that you’ve retracted your original claim, but in your last sentence you simply replaced with a slightly vaguer one which is equally untrue, so I’m not sure how much progress has actually been made here, fighting ignorance-wise.
Seriously, click on the link I supplied and page through ten pages or so of thread titles. Click on any link related to the staff and note the tone of the thread. I think you’ll find things were generally far more civil in the Pit back then than they are in the ATMB now, for the most part. The narrative that the rules change came about in response to a consistent pattern of staff abuse is simply false.
I see the poster you responded to has (while I was composing this) retracted, but dammit, I did the web-searches and wanna post my damn documentation.
To the best of my knowledge you’re completely correct, two (2) admin/mod types were ever called “cunts” in any sort of serious way. One was Veb way back in 2006 or so./ The other was Lynn, who was upset that someone had made a post that wasn’t to her political liking and pulled one of her famous “I’m making up a rule that you now retroactively broke, so you’re now IN TROUBLE, buster” rulings* that she was notorious for.
But back on topic–while Google does have the occasion false positive, given that people have been complaining that the Dope’s sketchy ad-servers have been, at minimum Serving Up Malware since 2010 (it’s taking longer than they thought), it seems far more likely that the SDMB finally got caught rather than Google trying to oppress the SDMB.
*Also see her banning (later changed to temp-banning) of Esprix for a retroactive “No humor in the Pit” rule that he didn’t violate when he posted, since she hadn’t actually made it up yet.
Damn, I’m positive for instance that I recall one poster in particular who made a habit of starting threads in the Pit abusing the mods but I’ll concede that memory is a notorious trickster so, in the spirit of the fight against ignorance, I’ll withdraw my final assertion in the last post.
But didn’t **Ed ** move board criticism to ATMB specifically because of staff abuse or am I misremembering that too? (It wouldn’t surprise me given my batting average so far).
And Fenris, thanks for the documentation. It completes my rout but it’s good to see the evidence.
No, on this point you are correct, that was the reason given.
I never access the site from a Google search page. I have it bookmarked, in both IE and Firefox. Usually I open it in Firefox, but I still check IR from time to time, particularly now.
Just been catching up on the updates since I was last able to log in, hoping for an official comment. Disappointment.
Saying it happens to every website might be hyperbole, but I’ve gotten the Big Red Warning pages on probably a good half-dozen websites over the past few years. Most were similar to here in that they started a hobby/sidelines and got big enough that they need ad revenue to cover hosting and maybe get the founder and one or two other people some sort of salary to maintain the site.
Saw a Slashdot article yesterday indicating that malvertising was up something like 200% in the past year, and one maybe a year back measuring that ads were now more likely to have malware than the stereotypical “dodgy porn site,” so it’s absolutely a big industry-wide problem. The SDMB may just be at the forefront of it.
I’m posting this with Safari that I’m running bare naked of extensions, including Adblock.
There are no ads at 9:22 p.m. central daylight time.
Like hell I’d ever spend a dime on a website that serves up malware to its customers.
:dubious:
(Adblockers, people – I can’t stress this enough.)
“Soviet Era Sex Robot” sounds like the best custom title ever.
Я твой слуга (Ja tvoi sluga) (I’m your slave)
Я твой работник (Ja tvoi rabotnik) (I’m your worker)
Kraftwerk - The Robots, something that Brainiac4 would appreaciate.
Let get some “Soviet Era Sex Robots” and have a Pussy Riot!
