It’s good to be back! I missed this joint. I was so surprised to NOT see the Chrome warning page.
More seriously, I’ve been known to make myself absent from this board for months at a time. I do recall the tone directed at the mods being increasingly hostile (in a relative sense) as time went on. Specifically, blinkered newbies used to get gobsmacked by Manhattan’s rough language, take their complaints to the pit, then receive a prompt roasting. Good times. David and Manhattan kept running totals of pit threads dedicated to them: it was considered an accomplishment.
By the by though, the teeming millions became less supportive of the Staff. Then we had a big brouhaha and the rest is history.
I dived into this Pit list and came up with these examples:
Complaint by experienced (now banned) poster: Coldfire is mean to me.
Everyone else: snort. (5/2002)
Ok, the next one was an Opalcat attack on Coldfire 5/2002, which I just as soon not comment on out of respect for the deceased. link
Accolades for MeBuckner: Damn you MEBuckner! - The BBQ Pit - Straight Dope Message Board , 5/2002.
Ok, that’s the control group. Not a lot of effective attacks on the mods back then. I perceive that the teeming millions got increasingly hostile over time, the discussion moved to ATMB, the hostility continued for a while and then tapered off slowly. I admit “Hostility” is too strong a word, but I can’t think of a better one. Butthurtedness?
My Google fu sucks. Link please?
Looks like the anti-virus and Google are going after all the ad providers. I just got a black warning bar on Buddy TV from McAfee. Pretty sure I got a warning bar on Youtube yesterday.
I guess the Dope and the others are all drinking from the same poisoned well? I’m hoping maybe enough heat will be generated to get the ad bots to cleanup their coding. I don’t think they are deliberately trying to infect anyone.
“That was the reason given.” Response Score: Politician
Uhm, a warning bar from McAfee and Google blacklisting a site, leading to its access being barred from Chrome and the giant Do Not Enter from Firefox are different, non?
(Sorry for double posting, but I’m on mobile and editing to quote is eh.)
I think McAfee is doing the same test that Google and Chrome do. Except it’s done real time when you enter the site. Google tests randomly and only blocks if there is excessive numbers of malware hits. Browsers like Chrome and Firefox checks Google’s status to see if the site has been marked as dangerous.
No warnings for at least a couple days now. Is the storm over?
Pretty much – they turned the ads off.
We’re no longer blacklisted.
We’re only graylisted.
For now…
I received a warning for the first time just now. Using IE.

We recommend that you do not continue to this website.
The warning came from Advanced Systemcare.
The warning comes up with every link I click on. That’s annoying.
