One of the most arresting images dished up so far by the Second Gulf War was the Iraqi Information Ministry briefing brought to you by Chrome-Plated Kalashnikov Guy.
However, as far as I am aware, all subsequent briefings from the Ministry have been delivered solo by the shorter, dark-haired, and apparently unarmed Minister for Information.
Does anyone know why this might be? Was CPKG, with his slightly wacky presentational style, deemed to be too far ‘off message’ to be trusted? Has he gone home to bring in his rhinestone-studded grenade launcher for the next briefing?
(In an effort to prevent the mods moving this off somewhere else, let me try to formulate the question in a manner befitting this forum: would bringing a chrome-plated Kalashnikov to a press briefing be considered eccentric in Iraqi military circles, or is this standard operating procedure?)
there are thousands of chrome-plated Kalashnikovs out there, so I guess it was just as common as tweed jacket guy in England.
granted, those thousands of chrome plated weapons are only chrome plated inside their barrels to prevent corrosion, you did ask specifically about chrome plating.
I dunno anything about chrome plated Kalashnikovs, but the Soviets used chrome SKS’s for ceremonial purposes long after they had been made obsolete by Kalashnikovs.
Well, if you’re going to be nitpicky, I’ll nitpick: If you’re talking about run of the mill chrome plated bore AKs, you’re talking about millions, not thousands.
