quick ?- i read the name chronos and i was wondering if that came from an anime movie. i can’t remember what movie that came from, which is why i’m writing this. i remember that chronos was the huge corporate-conglomerate evil empire. i thought it was funny at my work when i used my kronos card to punch into the kronos machine every day. that was the only other reference i had until i came to this board. so please refresh me if you can. thank!-kristina
Chronos is the personification of Time. The “old man with the beard and scythe” you see on the New Year’s cards. You really must broaden your cultural base.
There was also a highly groovy sideways-scrolling shoot-em-up for the Spectrum 48k, Commodore 64 et al, known as CHRONOS. It was dead good and the cheat code was to type JINGITBABY into the high score table then you got this thing called a megalaser which just went on and on and I remember there were lots of (sniiiiiip)

Actually, I got the idea from the Piers Anthony novel Bearing an Hourglass. I’ve always been slightly interested (OK, obsessed) with the nature of time, and I’m following the corresponding career path (relativistic physics), so the name seemed appropriate. Plenty of other literary sources have played off the Chronos-time connection, so it’s not surprising you’ve seen it elsewhere. Oh, and it’s my colleague Death (aka Thanatos) who wields the scythe, not me. I have the Hourglass.
Meanwhile, GQ isn’t really the place for threads asking individual posters about their usernames (that’s more MPSIMS, if asking an individual, and IMHO, if it’s a group), and the person addressed in the OP has already answered, so I’ll just close this rather than moving it.
