Chrysler -2000 3-speed aut. transmission TorqueFlite A413 / 31TH symptons

I have a problem with such a transmission box. When I start to drive, only first gear works. After couple of minutes I change gear from D to 2 and 1. After that to D again and now transmission works nicely. This has happened now last two times I have tried. That’s pretty much all driving after it quit working. I was accelerating really rapidly but have to ease the pedal almost immediately, which probably resulted in heavy “motor braking”. Immediately after that the problem appeared for a first time. No error codes on computer.

Does this exclude any possible reasons for the problem?

What exactly do you mean by “only first gear works”? Does the car not move at all unless it is in first? Does the transmission stay stuck in first which makes your engine rev really high once you get going? Something else?

that transaxle is not electronically controlled, so there won’t be any codes. if it won’t upshift unless you manually move the selector to “2” then I’d suspect something going on in the valve body. how well has this trans been maintained?

Have you checked the fluid level? Ideally the fluid will be warm after about 20 miles of driving and you’ll be parked on a flat surface. Leave the engine running and the transmission in Park. If it’s low, like not even on the dipstick, then maybe some of the proper type of transmission fluid will work.

It’s also possible that the filter is clogged some. It’s not the easiest job as you have to remove the transmission oil pan to get at the filter. There’s also a magnet on the pan to catch steel particles. If you remove this magnet make sure to put it back exactly like it came out.

Oh! A transmission flush will not clean the filter.

Yes. it runs initially on high RPM without upshifting. It should be well maintained, I’m the third owner and it seems others took really a trouble to maintain the car. I has only 80k miles on counter. Maybe I’m gonna check the fluid level and see if I can fix the problem that way. The car is not worth of extensive gearbox repairs I’m afraid.
