A little late starting the thread so I’ll dispense with the preview.
Another genius bit of casting with Swoosie Kurtz and Fred Willard as the older spy couple. I can totally see Chuck and Sarah as the Turners in thirty years. I’m glad we’re past all the Chuck/Sarah angst.
Agree on the great casting of Kurtz and Willard. Otherwise it was kind of a forgettable episode, though. At least until the end, with Ellie and Devon. They’d better not kill off Awesome!
What kind of bugs me is that Casey was ordered to train Morgan. But he didn’t really train Morgan. He just gave Morgan tasks but didn’t give him any instruction on how to go about doing them. Casey didn’t even bother to give Morgan proper safety training on the Sig before letting him fire it. I don’t see why Boot Camp would have been bad for Morgan.
It wouldn’t have been bad for Morgan at all, except that A) Morgan would almost certainly flunk out of it and B) Casey would have to admit failure by sending him in the first place.
Reality check tho - of the things Morgan can successfully do - Stealing Big Mike’s badge should’ve been a cake walk for him - The gun bit was hilarious too.
gun bit was cliche. i was hoping that morgan would be a real marksman. but then again, i’m not a fan of the bumbling fool trope that morgan embodies. seriously though, morgan’s got to be good at something other than knowing intimate details about chuck.
if i were writing for the show i would have much rather had morgan complete casey’s tasks “in his own way”. like getting the girl’s number by lifting her phone or something. and getting big mike’s badge by sneaking in ambien into his subway subs. and being a crack shot because of all the hours he spent on area51 when he was a kid. stuff like that.
Morgan is loyal, and he has balls. In Casey’s opinion, that’s more important than mad charm and guns skills. If Casey is okay with Morgan, I’ll assume the other stuff can be learned.
I liked the episode a lot - including the faux-70’s opening bit. But you guys are right - it would be much more interesting if Morgan was surprising. He should come across as a bumbling nerd, but in the end figure out how to do his task, but always in some strange way that no one expected. It could be his hidden talent.
Work in his video game skills, his knowledge of superhero tactics from comics, whatever. But just being a bumbling dweeb who says stupid things and is totally incompetent at everything will get old really fast.
For example, take the gun scene. Morgan knew the make and model of the gun and all of its characteristics. That was cool. The notion that he’d have no idea about the recoil was silly. It made for a funny scene, but what would have been better would have been if Casey had rolled his eyes and written him off, and then Morgan had said something like, “Note: Recoil must be compensated for. Call of Duty didn’t have that. I’ll call that a bug in real life. Let me try again.” And then have him put five shots in the ten ring. Casey looks at him stupefied, and Morgan calmly says, “That’s nothing. You should try it from the back of a moving truck with half the German army shooting at you.”
