Is there any truth to the statement that most hospitals are started by churches?

Is there data on what percentages are owned by what denominations?

My understanding was that most hospitals were – i.e., in the past – started by churches, synagogues, and similar groups. This was because until recent decades, such services were considered to be in the social service sector, and were handled by communites rather than governments. I don’t know what sparked the change.
