I just saw Dralion under the big top in Tyson’s Corner Virginia. It was way cool
This is cool… I’m off to Orlando this weekend to catch them, but I don’t know which show they have there (except that they do have a permanent show in Orlando). I’ll let you guys know how it goes when I get back!
I dragged my art hating, neo-bubba husband to Mystere in Vegas. We had awesome seats, then first thing the main character threw a beach ball that hit his beer and soaked him. Five minutes later a bird-like creature jumped on the back of my chair, startled me, and caused me to dump my glass of wine onto my beer soaked honey. In spite of all that, he LOVED the show.
He still thinks it was the most awesome show he’s ever seen. He even took me to Beau Rivage to see Alegria right after it opened.
You have to go see it!!!
If you get to Orlando, you have to go to Downtown Disney to see the La Nouba troupe. Whatever it costs isn’t enough. Though it’s a bit eerie, every second is an experience.
I saw Cirque du Soleil when they came to Portland. It was amazing. It’s worth the ticket price. I was blown away.
Interesting story, too; my stepfather and my mother bought tickets to it at the same time as my father. For the same show, but different times. Except my dad is actually in a latin band, which was playing at some post-presentation party for the CdS members where they had a celebration for completing their first performance or something. So I had sort of a behind-the-scenes-of-the-behind-the-scenes look. That is, if I would’ve gone with my dad. I ended up going with my mom and stepdad, but it was an excellent show.
I saw both Mystere and O in Vegas. Definitely worth the money. Both were awesome–although unlike Five, I preferred Mystere.
I, also, saw Dralion at Tyson’s Corner last month and it was GREAT. It cost us $160 for the three of us… plus $10 for the program… but hey, it was really cool. I loved it, my husband loved it, and Nicky, at age 5, also loved it.
I am also one of those who refused to go to a “traditional” circus because of the animals.
Saw Alegria in person… I have never been a fan of mimes or clowns, but DAMN, my heart just broke at the end of the ‘hobo’ mime performance. Spectacular performance - from a MIME. I also loved most of the rest of the show, but contortionists are just contortionists, and I’ve seen plenty of them. The whole effect, the continuity between one performer and the next, THAT is what makes this different from a ‘regular circus’. And that is what addicted me to it the first time I saw it on PBS. Well worth going once, just to see if you like it… And I’d go for the hot tickets, too (might as well make it a blowout!).
Re: the hijack, the last time I saw a ‘real’ circus was one my DH took me to because they had Mongolian ponies performing. THAT killed circuses for me… not because of the ponies, who were clearly chosen because they LOVED performing (if horses could grin, these guys would have been grinning ear to ear - and that is a LONG way, even on a smaller horse!). No, it was because the rest of the animals so clearly were not enjoying themselves, something that was especially dramatic and sickening in contrast. If you’ve ever watched a horse that LOVES to jump compete in jumping, you’ll know what I mean. I don’t remember ever seeing any other circus animals that had that kind of presence, fire, interest, life, passion, or whatever it is that shows in their eyes, posture, ears, and action.
Haven’t seen Cirque du Soleil. My boss has, and he claims it’s well worth the price. He spent all morning talking about it (and this was back when I actually had work to do at work).
I have seen the Peking Acrobats, both by buying tickets and also when they were coincidentally at Epcot Center when I was there. Abridged show, but still great. Truly amazing, but the comment about abused animals is probably correct.
Also, two weeks ago I saw the “Shao Lin Warriors” kung fu troupe, which was very much like the Acrobats. Highly recommended, but the Acrobats were better.
I second that motion! My wife and I went to Disney World for our honeymoon this past August and saw the show while we were there. The music was fantastic and the things they did were incredible! My favorite was the trampoline artists. They would jump off the a raised platform onto a trampoline. As they bounced back up, it looked as if they were walking up the side of the building! It was fantastic. Another “act” was a lady would did an air ballet using red curtains. She would wrap her arms around the curtains and then they would raise up and she would perform twisty-turny type feats. It was pretty fantastic when she did that and went swinging out over the audience.
We left there quite amazed.
Regards.
Allegria has ended it’s run here in Biloxi (It’s been replaced by The Nutcracker on Ice for the holidays), and I don’t know if it’s going to be followed by another Cirque de Soleil show or not. I never saw it, but friends, family, and coworkers all said it was amazing.
When my family was in Las Vegas, I told them I had wanted to see a Cirque. I had seen Quidam on Bravo and loved it.
We made reservations for Mystere. It was really good.
O was sold out, but we decided to take the chance and wait in the standby line, since often people don’t show up.
We ended up watching O 5th row center orchestra! Those are high roller seats, just so you know. The shows are wonderful, and have the best music and I find them more enjoyable then regular circuses, but I like th artsy stuff.
I have a Cirque shirt and whenever I wear it, people are like “Cirque du Soliel” how neat!!
Actually, for me, the news that Alegría has ended its run is good news. I’ve been aching to see that show, but there was just no way I’d ever get the chance. Now that the show has closed, hopefully they’ll release it on video and/or DVD.
By the way, their website has lots of nifty stuff. From their show page, you can get to descriptions of the acts in each show and a few photos.
I saw Dralion in Minneapolis back in September and I loved it! We didn’t get the VIP tickets, but the next lowest down and we were still very close to the stage. It is a great show, I recommend it. I only wish I could have brought my camera…
