If it is a scam, then the phone number is part of the scam. Go to Citi’s actual website and get the number from there.
JR77, I don’t know if your letter is legit or not, but mine was, and after giving them the info they wanted, they sent me a check. You might want to try visiting the CA State Controller’s office to see if you can find anything there.
Each real state government has a real website that really does this. Go to the state’s main website and find their unclaimed property page. This isn’t hahrd and is it safe. If you start from the state’s actual website, not some link in a scammy email.
I just received one. I tried calling but no options to deal with this… I might just wait til it gets turned into state….I did receive a l check a couple of years ago but Citi bank could not verify it and there was a scam involved at one time…som I’m very cautious. I might just let it roll over to the state like it’s says.
Spent 20 years working in banking back rooms. Each state has some legal requirement to turn over inactive or dormant accounts that haven’t been used in X years (the practice is called escheating). Banks are loathe to do this because it pisses off their customers who are still alive and kicking. So most banks will send numerous letters - please do something - make a deposit, make a withdrawal, do something so we (the bank) doesn’t have to escheat the funds to the State. Dealing with the responses to those letters was always a fun part of the job - “No, Mrs. Jones I don’t want to steal your funeral savings account, the state just wants me (the bank) to insure that you’re alive and kicking.”
