I just found $2,014.48 for my husband.

Well, I was sitting here at the computer, eating some dinner, surfing, and listening to CBC Radio. They ran a short item on unclaimed bank balances. I know I have somewhere, an abandoned account at the Bank of Montreal, and once every few years, I check to see if it’s moved to unclaimed balances. No such luck, again. But I thought I’d check my husband’s name.

I got one page of results for his last name, and almost missed page two of the search results.

He and his late mother were listed on page two, the very last names. It’s a bank account last active in 1986. I am pretty sure it’s my husband and his mother, as he was very close with his mother and assisted both her and his grandmother in a million ways, including finances and acting as power of attorney for each of them. The account’s listed with both my husband and his mother’s middle names, which is not what I’d expect, but it’s the right city and the right middle and last names.

I can’t wait for him to come home and see! I’ve printed out the information and the claim process and form.

Crossing fingers that we’ll soon be $2,14.48 richer!

(I hope I get a finder’s fee!)

Oh, fellow Canadians, check out and see if you’ve got some loonies just waiting for you to rediscover them: http://ucbswww.bank-banque-canada.ca/scripts/search_english.cfm

Very nice.

I’ve been involved with unclaimed amounts at insurers where I’ve worked. It’s always been staggering just how large sum of the sums can be.

Yes, indeed, pity I didn’t stumble upon a million or so!

I think I’m not the only CBC listener to be clicking away; the web page is currently down. It probably got swamped. Heh.

I once lost my briefcase, and when it was found, they discovered $2000 or so stuck into it. Since it was over the phone, they asked me whether my bag had a whole bunch of money in it. "No… But I’ll gladly take it! " We verified that it was indeed my bag from the other contents, and so I went to pick it up.

Of course, first thing I open it up to find the money.

:smack:

It was my first paycheck that I’d received in bills because my bank account hadn’t been set up yet. After stuffing it in my bag, I’d promptly forgotten about it for 6 months or so…

I run searches for myself every few years and so far haven’t found anything. The OP reminded me I should do it again, maybe now there was something. There wasn’t. But then I searched my best friend, and he does have something. I called and told him, but he’s never heard of this and thinks it must be a scam. I keep telling him that I’ve known all about this for years, and it’s a legitimate department of the IRS, but he won’t believe it until he gets his money. It doesn’t say how much it is, but I get half, so hope it’s a lot!

I ran one of those searches last year, and found about $1200 for my boyfriends mother. Apparently an old job of hers never paid her last paycheck, and due to other circumstances she never noticed.

I ended up with a 10% finders fee. Paid for my couch!

What’s the site you use for US stuff?

Seconded. Where are you finding this list?

I used missingmoney.com and then search on my state.

Hey, thanks for the link–I’m not there, but NajaHusband is! Keeping my fingers crossed for $2,014.48 but it’s probably $1.45 or something. Cough up, Commonwealth of Virginia!

I’m glad you found something! If it’s a lot, I hope you remember those of us that have helped you in your times of need, by, say, giving you links and stuff like that.

Gee, and I feel lucky when I find a 20 baht bill (less than a buck) in a pair of trousers I haven´t used in some time.

Pretty cool. I hope it works out for you.

I set up an account with Bradford and Bingley with £1, in 1981, to get a free T-shirt*.

I haven’t touched it since. I really want to know how much it has accrued over the years. I hope it’ll make me rich beyond my wildest imaginings! Hoping there’s a UK version of this site!

*Do not ask me why I wanted a T-shirt with “Bradford & Bingley” printed on it. I was only 13.

Here’s the site for California residents. Someone with my dad’s name is missing $30, but it’s from a prison. Unless my dad has been hiding something, I’m pretty sure it’s not him.

I started a school magazine with a classmate, and at some point we banked the takings, about £20 or £30, in a joint post office savings account (do these things still exist?). This money was supposed to fund future issues, but the magazine fizzled out when no-one else took it on after we did our exams and left.

Since then, the savings book is long lost, and years have gone past without us being in town at the same time, so it’s still there. My friend and I are still in touch though, so maybe one day we’ll finally get round to retrieving it. It’s coming up to 30 years now.

We’ll have to give it to a charity for procrastinators or amnesiacs.

Here’s the site for Penna. residents. The brother of a friend of mine works in that office.

I was going to set one of those up, but I never got round to it. Then I forgot.

Turns out I have some money in there - less than 100 dollars. Whoohoo, I’m rich!

We got about $150 or so from the phone company that was owed to my husband. Not a lot, but something! In Indiana it’s www.indianaunclaimed.org. Every year, they print what appears to be their entire listing in the first Sunday paper of the year. It’s kind of neat.
