Missingmoney.com - found me $336.00

I really would advise everyone to go to Missingmoney.com and check to see if your state is holding on to any of your cash.

No, it’s not a scam.

Whenever some agency/business/company/whatever tries to send you a check, and they can’t find you, oftentimes the money gets turned over to the state you live in (in my case, the Minnesota Department of Commerce), where that money will just…sit.

They don’t try to find you. They just let it sit there–presumably gaining interest on the state’s behalf. You have to check it for yourself.

And, if you’re one of the lucky ones, all it will generally take is some basic proof of who you are, that the money is rightfully yours, and a notarized statement. You mail it in (or go straight to their offices, as I did) and 60 - 90 days later you get your money back.

You can check for yourself and for as many friends, neighbors and relatives as you want. In a few hours I found amounts owed to a couple of relatives, a number of friends, and a few co-workers. It was actually kind of fun.

It will generally tell you if the amount is over or under $100.00. All the ones I found except for two (my uncle and cousin) were for over $100.

Neat.

I got a little creative and began checking famous people. The only one I think might be legit is that the State of Oklahoma owes Carrie Underwood some money.

So, give it a shot. You might get lucky. And, as I said before, it’s not a scam–no fees, nothing.

Missingmoney.com

ETA: The website is a little wonky in the sense that you have to do all of your searches from the first page–NOT the search box that comes up on the second page as a result of your search. Just go back to the first page, put in another name and state, and have at it again.

And if you happen to score–report it here.

It’s interesting that the state outsources this gig to a private company. I got to Missingmoney.com directly from the Minnesota state website. The state must bee paying them a fee so the state can fire some of its own programmers.

Many states provide a search engine for unclaimed property on their own websites. I know that Wisconsin, Illinois, and Texas do, because I’ve used them.

Ditto for California.

California does, as well. I’ve found money for several people – just not myself. I knew a guy who used to run a side-job informing businesses about lost money, helping them collect it, and taking a cut.

I guess I like MissingMoney because I don’t need to know which department in whichever state to check–it does it for me.

If you search George Bush’s name in Texas, it looks like Galveston County is making an obscene suggestion to him.
[sub]Yes, I know it’s a credit union.[/sub]

I’ve done searches on sites like that, especially the one for California, where I live.

They never have anything for me. :frowning:

I found almost $2k for my dad. Before my parents got together, my dad was notoriously bad about his finances (things like just “forgetting” to pay bills on time, so despite making a good amount of money and living well beneath his means, having a shitty credit score). Anyways, he switched life insurance companies or car insurance companies or something and didn’t tell them his new address and I guess didn’t have his mail forwarded. Crazy!

ETA: Jesus, just found more for them. Thanks OP!

Holy mackerel! Mrs. Simmons & I were pondering just a couple weeks ago over a check we found buried in some old papers, wondering if we should try to cash it even though it was many years old … No point–money was forwarded to the state of Texas, it seems. Just under $100! Score!

My husband is owed some money from Direct Energy, LP, from two address changes ago. I dug a little deeper… the amount? $1.16. Bah.

Interesting. Typo Knig shows up in our state - as does his cousin. His grandmother (deceased 10 years) shows up in her state. I’ve notified my father-in-law about that.

Missingmoney only catalogs 37 or so states, so be sure to look at the list on their site before thinking there’s nothing out there for you.

Googling **<state name> unclaimed **should get your target state’s department of unclaimed property at the top of the list.

Thank you for posting this! Soon I will be $27.65 richer, awesome!

Nothing for me :frowning: but there seems to be something for my dad. Hope it’s good!

For Canadians, the site is http://ucbswww.bank-banque-canada.ca/scripts/search_english.cfm I just found out that my husband is owed over 700$!

I got a hit! Texas is on there and it shows me from the time I lived in Angleton.

I have…$0.00 showing as being owed to me.
WTF? :frowning:

You really ought to go through the process of claiming it. I’d give even odds on them sending you a check for $0.00.

Nothing for me, but my ex-boyfriend is owed less than $100 for an electric deposit in an apartment we shared. Dangitall.

Egad.

Typo Knig just got a check for 860 dollars from our state.

We have absolutely no idea where this originated.

Rysdad, we owe you some chocolate!!

Well.

There’s something for my autistic sister- at the last adress we lived. About wtelve or thirteen years ago.
