New York city contains New York county (Manhattan) in New York State.
Washington is a city, and Washington is a state. They have the same name. How is that not an example of a city and a state sharing the same name?
So that’s Nevada City, in Nevada County, in California state. What were they thinking?
Also, looking at the wikipedia article, I strongly support switching it back to the original Lakota name.
This specific question is about a city having the name of the state that it is in, such as New York, New York or Nebraska City, Nebraska.
That the Sierra Nevada is mostly in California.
If we use the actual Lakota name (“heȟáka čhé”), we might be able to avoid the mild embarrassment of what it translates to in English.
Then again, the English translation could be euphemised, like “Elkwood”.
Which specific question? I didn’t see anyone asking that.
What happens in Nebraska, stays in Nebraska.
Apparently.
This is almost difficult for me to get my mouth around. It just won’t come out.
But it reminds me of Buena Vista: pronounced Byouna Vista.
Can’t remember now what state that is.
Yes, but buddha_dave’s question wouldn’t make any sense if your interpretation was what he meant. He was responding to the list that as you note had many examples of the strictly literal interpretation. I suppose you could go for the AI interpretation of the question, but sometimes you have to put more effort in trying to pass the Turing test (unless you were nitpicking just for the sake of nitpicking, in which case, fair enough.)
This is the question, and the only way it makes sense if you are talking about a city and state containing it sharing the same name.
Eh, it could also make sense if it came from a person who hadn’t read most of the thread, which is also pretty common.
That’s possible, but by singling out NY, NY as the only example that meets the criteria it would seem unlikely. No harm, no foul.

Or hadn’t even read four consecutive posts.
Concerning Hawaii: There is an older form of the name “Owyhee” which is the name of a river in SE Oregon and a bit in Nevada and Idaho. From that, counties in Oregon and Idaho take their name. And …
a town in Nevada!
Perhaps there are more places that use older/alternate forms of state names.
It’s a well-known fact* that the name of Newark originated from the way people in New Jersey mispronounce New York.
*Which I just made up.
People don’t realize that the 5 boroughs of NYC are co-extant with 5 counties, which mostly have different names than the boroughs. The Borough and island of Manhattan is co-extant with New York County, so if you are in Manhattan, You are in New York City, County, and State. This doesn’t count for the other 4 Boroughs.
Yes, NYC covers 5 Counties: NY County, Bronx County, Queens County, Kings County(Brooklyn) and Richmond County (Staten Island).
As a small nit-pick, though an interesting one, New York County and the Borough of Manhattan are not precisely co-extant with Manhattan Island, since these include the Marble Hill area on the mainland, due to filling in part of the Harlem River.
Idaho City is not in Idaho County, it is in Boise County, but Boise is in Ada County (something exclusive about a palindrome there). Meanwhile, Idaho Springs is in Colorado.
