Civ3 (computer game)

Welcome, fellow gamers!

  1. The manual for Civ3 says that the attitude of computer opponents (and the likely starting positions) is affected by which group your tribe belongs to.
    The groups are given as:

Amerindian
Greco-Roman
European
Far Eastern
Middle Eastern

Sadly, even with the extension ‘Play the World’, the exact members of these groups are not given.

Can the SDMB state which belong where?
(I realise that common sense will probably locate most tribes, but I like a definitive answer!)

  1. In a recent game, I had a city near Flood Plain squares, some with wheat. (Excellent - plenty of growth!)
In Despotism, I was able to ‘rush’ building projects by ‘selling’ citizens into ‘slavery’ :o
However the city was less ‘happy’ than others (which had with the same buildings + access to luxuries) for hundreds of years.
Any offers on how that works - is it the more slaves, the more unhappiness?

Rushing stuff by using your citizens instead of money(in Despotism, Communism, etc) increases unhappiness for 20 turns IIRC.

  1. Geography isn’t really that tough.

IIRC,
Amerindian: Iroquois, Aztec, Americans
Greco-Roman: (well) Greeks, Romans
European: English, French, Germans, Russian, [Celts, Spanish, Vikings]
Far Eastern: Chinese, Japanese, [Koreans, Mongols]
Middle Eastern: Persia, Egypt, Babylon, [Arabs, Carthaginians, Ottomans]

Another way is to look at the cities of these countries. eg All Greco-Roman cities look alike. This way is foolproof.

I always like to direct Civ III fans to Civ Fanatics Board - particularly the FAQ and Reference guides (the reference guide talks about the Culture group, among many other things). There are other references such as Resources, Units, Stragety, etc.
The message boards threads can go into incredible detail about arcane CIV subjects, perhaps enough that your eyes will glaze over…

Thanks all!

Another good result for the SDMB.

xejkh: You forgot Indians and Zulus. Indians are obviously Far Eastern, and Zulus are interestingly enough Middle Eastern (there is no African culture group). Additionally the game seems to think Egyptians as a Greco-Roman civ, although them being middle-eastern would be far more accurate.

I also recommend civfanatics.com for its guides and boards. Just remember that there are a lot of junk too in there…

Also try apolyton.com

It’s a bit of a hijack, but…are there any mods available for Civ 3 that make the combat a bit more “realistic”? And by that I mean none of this “having governments keep archers and pikemen around into the 22nd century, and still have them do pretty well against tanks” stuff. The stuff that had been fixed in Civ 2 with the addition of a “firepower” number to unit stats.

It’s just a sticking point with me, somehow. One that’s keeping me from buying the game. What would be the fun in building up a world-conquering superpower if I can be routed by veteran triremes?

I’m sure the men and women of the U.S.S. Cole share your frustration.

Though I’ll admit some of the outcomes are ridiculous.

Yeah, but at least the guys who cripples the Cole didn’t do it with frikkin Bronze swords.

Funny, I always thought I was working them to death.

I’ve been thinking of getting Rise of Nations. It sounds a lot like Civilization.
