Civ4: Colonization - a game blog

11% Rebel Sentiment (will improve when Newspaper arrives)

1572 – 1582

Summary of forces:

I have 3 Cannon, 2 Caravels, 19 Colonists.
King has 9 Soldiers, 4 Dragoons, 6 Artillery and 4 Warships.

1573
Native converts in Tuskagee.
Sell Cigars and Tobacco to Europe, buy Guns and Horses (as Guns ‘n Roses not an option  ).

1574

Meet English (John Adams). Exchange World Maps, then he hands over 300gp as my friend.
2 Colonists join Guadaloupe (as Farmer and Lumberjack).
Caravel arrives in Montreal. Pickup Farmer and 100 Ore.

1575

Francisco offers +1 movement for Dragoons. Accept (could be vital in War of Independence).
Pioneer improving terrain around Guadaloupe.

1576

King raises tax rate to 6%. Accept.

1577

Meet Arawaks on Sacrifice.

1578

Pickup Criminal on Docks (will convert to Missionary).
Wagon Train is bringing Wood, Furs and Food to Quebec (2 cargoes at a time).

1579

Scout enters Tiiis (Apache) on Sacrifice. Farmers, no reward.

1580

Buy Blacksmith from Europe (for Quebec) and Tools (for trading).
New Colonist in Quebec – acts as Elder Statesman until Native Schooled.
Expansion pressure by Spanish has pushed Criminal in Montreal to become a … Silver Miner!
(Actually he’s OK at it, since the minimum production is 1.)

1581

Caravel arrives from Montreal. Farmer heads for Guadeloupe to free up Colonist.

1582

Decline Jan (less Tools needed for buildings). Caravel arrives from Europe and heads to Tellico to trade Tools.

1582 – 1592

1583

Farmer joins Guadaloupe.
Fisherman and Native ready to transport from Paella to Rien.
Treasure train stuck on Sacrifice (no Port and I don’t want to sacrifice another Colonist). Decide to use it simply to map.
Sell Tools cheaply in Tellico (Cherokee appear low on funds). Buy Furs from them. N.B. Should have sold before buying! :smack:

1584

Elder Statesman Schooled – move next Colonist into School*.
Pocohontas offers to join, but Native relations already fine. Refuse.
Sacrifice appears larger than either Rien or Paella. (So much for map of ‘one land mass’!)
*Eventually I want 3 Elder Statesman in Quebec and one in every other Settlement.

1585

Decline John Smith (cheaper Native Land).

1586

Accept Benjamin (Liberty Bell bonus).
Establish Mission in Chichii. Pickup 39 Furs (as good friend). Buy 41 Cotton for 172gp.

1587

Native converts in Tuskagee.
Elder Statesman Schooled – move next Colonist into School.
Decline to pay King 240gp.
Blacksmith arrives in Quebec.

1588

Reject William (cheaper Native Land).
Tax rate up to 11%. Accept.
Sacrifice is both large and deserted. Give Bolivar World Map. He then gifts me 90gp.
Pickup Farmer and 14 Silver from Montreal.

1591

Decline Jacques (+1 move for Scout).
Meet Tupi , Sioux and Iroquois on Sacrifice.

1592

Decline Adam (Factory); accept Samuel (Liberty Bells).

1592 – 1600

1593

New Colonist in Montreal.

1594

Transfer 100 guns and horses to Guadaloupe for storage. Look innocently at French King.
Enter Iroquois village. Ore Miners, no reward.

1595

Enter Iroquois village. Farmers, no reward. Reach Montreal, Caravel loads Farmer.

1596

Accept Alexander (+3 hammers per Town Hall! ).
Switch all small Settlement Production into Political points (for Founding Fathers with Liberty Bell bonuses.)
Farmer arrives in Guadaloupe. This is now a useful backup Settlement, producing Food/Lumber/Furs + Political points, as well as storing Tools/Guns/Horses.
Warehouse in Quebec for extra storage.

1597

Tax rate to 16%. Accepted.
Newspaper complete in Quebec. Start on Armory.

1598

New Colonist in Quebec. (Soon will start creating Dragoons.)

1599

Elder Statesman Schooled – move next Colonist into School. Send him to Guadaloupe.
Enter Iroquois village.

1600

Native converts in Chichii (starts learning Farming there).

1600 summary

I have 27 Colonists (1 doomed in Montreal), plus 3 cannon, 300 stored horses and guns (plus 100 horses and guns on Caravel.)
King has 11 Regulars, 5 Dragoons, 7 Artillery and 4 Warships.

I reckon I need about 1/3 of the King’s Regulars, Dragoons and Artillery, i.e. (11+5+7) / 3 = 8 of my Dragoons.

Once I’ve built an Armory (for Cannons), Fort + Fortress* in Quebec and gifted Montreal away, I should be ready to declare Independence. (I’ll choose the option that gives me two Servants per Settlement and use them to free up Colonists who become Dragoons.

I think I’m going to win!

1601-1610

1601

Decline Alexander (faster College etc). Accept Patrick (more Liberty Bells).
Install Elder Statesman in Guadaloupe.

1602

Buy 100 guns and horses in Europe. Look innocently at French King.
Farmer trained in Chichii. Warehouse built in Guadaloupe.

1603

Enter Inca village on Sacrifice. No reward (and too late to train anyone here).

1604

Native converts in Tuskagee (starts training there).
Colonist joins in Quebec - converted to 1st Dragoon (of many!)
Buy Scout and 50 guns in Europe. Look innocently at French King. :stuck_out_tongue:

1605

John Jay Accepted (more Liberty Bells).

1606

Discover Dutch on Sacrifice. Gift them World map, agree Open Borders, then acquire 90gp as their ‘good friend’.
Sell World Map to John Adams for 60gp. (Every little helps!)

1608

Scout and 50 guns arrive in Quebec – convert into 2nd Dragoon.

1609

Transfer 100 Tools from Quebec to Guadaloupe for storage.
Start clearing Forest on coast of Rien, so King’s troops have no cover.

1611-1617

Rebel Sentiment 52%
King has 17 Regulars, 5 Dragoons, 7 Artillery and 4 Warships.

1612

Pickup 100 Ore from Montreal. Gift it to John Adams.
No sign of Criminal, so presumably resident Colonists are included in gift.

1613

French King increases his forces by 2 Regulars.
My aim is to declare Independence just before he does it again…

1614

Fort in Quebec.
Should I build Fortress (7 turns) or Cannon (5 turns)? Go for Cannon…
Turn down Chief (bonus Strength for Natives).

1615

All 3 Caravels approaching Quebec - typically good time to declare Independence…
New Colonist in Quebec – straight to Dragoon.

1616

Native joins in Chichii. Unlikely I can get him to Quebec in time. Should disband him (giving slightly more Rebel Sentiment), but sentimentally train him instead.
2 more Dragoons built in Quebec.

1617

Farmer and Ore arrive from Montreal. Convert him to Dragoon.
James Madison Accepted (more Guns built).
French King increases his forces by 3 Dragoons. :frowning: Didn’t want that just yet – will go for Independence soon…
Bolivar declares war on Adams. Doesn’t matter to me. Wonder if the gift of Montreal sparked border tensions?!

1618 Summary

King has 19 Regulars, 8 Dragoons, 7 Artillery and 4 Warships.

It’s 126 years from landfall, we got a full tank of Dragoons (8), half a pack of Cannons (3), it’s dark, and we’re wearing fur hats.
Hit it!

I DECLARE INDEPENDENCE!

Good Luck!

Now hand that Frenchie king his ass on a plate

We’re rooting (creating Liberty Bells?) for you!

1618 (War begins)

I choose:

All Men are Free (+2 servants in each colony)
Monarchy (keep trading)
Native Rights (friendly relations)
Separation of Church and State (Crosses into Liberty Bells)
Controlled Arms (+50% Liberty Bells)

Convert 5 more Dragoons.

1619
Caravel arrives with horses and guns - convert 2 more Dragoons.

1620
Turn down Lewis (Wagon train benefit).
French Men O’ War due any time now…

1621
Turn down John (+50% Furs).
French land on E side of Rien (away from my 2 Settlements). Too far away to fight yet.
Stay calm, but move about half my Dragoons (8) to Guadaloupe.
Move Caravels by hand to avoid Men O’ War if possible.

1622
More French landings, nearer Guadaloupe.
BEGIN FIGHTING!
Rebel Sentiment 61% (so my units gain 61-50 = 11% combat strength.)

I’m going to summarise the War. Note that I got a Great General early and used him to promote one unit to Surgeon 1, 2 + 3. (Healing up quickly is vital.)
I’ll only mention years where fighting occurred…

The info below is Year / Rebel Sentiment /My casualties / French casualties:

1622 / 61% / -1 / -5
1623 / 64% / -3 / -7

1631 / 79% / -2 / -5
1632 / 88% / -1 / -6

1642 / 88% / 0  / -7
1643 / 88% / -1 / -2

We have Independence!
Year: 1644
Score: 1239

I really enjoyed doing that, even though it was weird continually stopping to write notes when I just wanted to play the game!

I hope the game position may get posted, so you can see the map for yourself.

As I’m now on half-term holiday, would anyone like another game blog?
(If so, do suggest a leader / map / level and I’ll consider that carefully.)

Congratulations, Glee!

Yeah, Congrats on victory from those filthy french

I would sure like to read another one. What about one at a harder level?

(as I don’t own the game, yet, I don’t know what they’re called)

double post

You don’t own the game yet?!:eek:
Why deny yourself such pleasure?

OK, there are seven levels, starting Pilgrim / Pioneer / Explorer.

As I’ve managed to win a few games on Pioneer, I’ll try an Explorer.
I think it makes more sense to open a new thread, which is here.

Merci beaucoup, mon ami*.

*getting dangerously close to using up my full vocabulary of French…
