Civilization IV: Colonization (PC strategy ahoy!)

When the war came, King Louis whooped this Viceroy good. The new game as the English is going muuuuuuuuch better.

I’m spending way too much time with this game.

As I’m semi-retired, I have spare time. :o

Would anyone be interested in a Colonisation blog thread, giving details (every 10 years or so) of an actual game of mine?

Hell yes! Blog away my friend.

That would be an interesting read! So please do.

Might give nifty tips for when I get my hands on this baby.

I’d love a blog thread on your game

OK, I’m starting the blog thread here.

I’ll be watching, glee. Thanks!

Since there’s a pretty good following of the game here, we should try our hands at all playing the same game and see how everyone does. Basically, we pick the conditions, one person starts the game, saves it, then passes the save file around to everyone else. Then we all load that save file and go from there, and see who does the best with the same start. They do that on Civfanatics.com and it looks pretty fun.

I’m up for it.

Me too! Sounds like good fun.

Let’s do it then! I’ll set one up tonight. Any preferences on the initial settings? If no one has any compelling specific requests, I’ll just make it a standard size map with a random colony. And shall we start it somewhat easy? Maybe the second or third difficulty level?

Second please - I don’t want to embarras myself (I’ve only had one attempt at third difficulty at the moment and I still haven’t won it).

OK second level it is. Here’s the file:

Details:

Leader: Samuel de Champlain of France (picked randomly)
Map: A_new_world
Difficulty: Pioneer
Speed: Normal
World size: Small

Have at it!

Ok I just finished my first crack at the game above, and FAILED. >< I had a serious colony going, with a ton of weapons and people stockpiled for the war, but I didn’t manage the rebel sentiment early enough and I was only up to 40% when I ran out of turns. Another 30 turns and I would have had him. ><

I ended up settling four cities on the south coast of the new world, getting a decent cigar and cloth trade going, as well as finding plenty of ore for tools -> weapons. Being French I sent missionaries out too all the neighboring native settlements as soon as possible, and that paid off pretty well.

Final score: 765
Victory: None :frowning:

I may try again if I can squeeze another one in. This time I’ll start cranking out the bells earlier.

This turned out to be a good map.
I’ve just started my War of Independence in 1617  , and am on course for a swift victory.

P.S. Would you be interested in a saved game?
Could I send it to you for zipping and posting here?

Surely. Send it to chris AT slackercentral.com and I’ll toss it up.

I assume your AT is @…

Thanks for that - I’ll do it as soon as I get home.

I’m finishing up a game I had already started. Hopefully I’ll begin this one tonight or tomorrow.

Two questions:

  1. Dumb one first: where should I extract the zipped file to?

  2. In any game so far, what’s the most you’ve ever been producing per turn of an item in a single colony? In my current game, it’s 1717 and I’m producing 69 units of cloth per turn in Jamestown (and I turned down Betsy Ross!). I was pretty impressed by my production there (it’s tough to keep up the wagon trains full of cotton though).

OK, SDMB - here’s the new bar:

Final Score: 3991
Victory: Independence 1631
Time taken: 4 hr 9 min

I’ll send the game to Slacker, who has kindly offered to post it.

I’ve clearly got something wrong here because the absolute earliest I could even think of declaring independence is in the 1700s, I just can’t get the bells fast enough. What am I doing wrong? Should I be focusing on one large and lots of small colonies so that the population is relatively small and able to jack up into independence quickly, or should I be trying to get the bells in all colonies very early? The latter seems to mean that I’ll end up with a huge REF to contend with though. Any advice appreciated.
